I work at a publically-funded 'English Camp' located at public high school and am officially employed by the Superintendent of the Provincial Office of Education. Next week, Monday is a statutory holiday, plus, we will not teach any classes Tue. through Fri. The official grand opening of the camp is on Wednesday and the Director/Contractor has informed us that on Tuesday, we will come in and clean the building in preparation for the opening ceremonies. Part of me thinks - "No big deal (it's like trading a day's labour as a janitor for getting Thursday and Friday off)", but another part thinks - "No way! I'm not a janitor - this will just open up a 'slippery slope' with no end.

Are we talking hard floor mopping, window cleaning all day labour or just a bit of light dusting which won't take five minutes?
If it is just to give the place the once over, to make sure it looks ok for the opening, I would say yes. But if they are talking hard graft then why should you? That is what cleaners are for. If they insist I guess you could say you have other plans. |

schools don't employ cleaners here.... and i think that's kinda good, makes the students respect their space more. But, you haven't got any students (yet) and Tuesday's a working day so that's the job. But I wouldn't do anything 'icky'. Plus, you'd earn some 'good on ya' points from boss and co-workers for not being a nit picking wingy way-gook. it's the little things that count. |

I am told that my school employs a cleaner, but I have yet to see any evidence of her work. |

Oh, we have students here! (we've been open for three weeks and had three groups of students go through)... it's just the 'official' grand opening is next Wednesday. The students do spend the last five minutes of each day sweeping their classroom, but that's superficial.
I believe the Director is talking about an all-day, serious 'douch' of the building - the toilets have NEVER been done, and I've still got sawdust from the construction on my computer. |

For practical reasons, ie. no one is going to clean it otherwise, I might do it under protest.
Ideally, no way!
But all this is my opinion. |

If someone told me I could spend tuesday cleaning and take the rest of the week off I think I'd do that every week =) cleaning isn't so bad.. I used to be a nightclub cleaner until I became an english teacher. You're lucky you're getting thursday and friday off and they're not giving you stupid office make-work or whatever. Go clean, its satisfying to do a good thorough clean.. I used to spend hours polishing the taps in the bathrooms and getting the floor 'just so' in my nightclub..

I was once assigned janitorial duties along with another teacher. He whined and did a really crappy job of it; I got stuck into it and did a pretty decent job. Not long after that I got a raise, and he didn't.
The moral is that if you can't be trusted to do those sh*tty little jobs properly, then you can't be trusted to do the important tasks properly either.
No one wants to work with a person who's only going to make an effort if and when it suits them. |

I've heard of this before..
I would tell them that that particular day was impossible for me due to previously planned engagements.. but that I'll be there the day the classes start. |

I assumed the OP was getting paid for that Tuesday. It would be a little brash to be making other engagements and still expect a day's pay, wouldn't it? |

I dont mind cleaning up my classroom from time to time....vacumning, dusting and general tidying.
I would draw the line at bathrooms or scrubbing the floors though.
Its one thing to keep your classroom neat and another to have to scrub it from top to bottom. |

OK, I've decided the least I can do is to help clean on Tuesday (it IS a work day, after all); and I'll do a good job! We're not going to start until 10:00 and we''l probably be finished by 14:00. Wednesday is the official opening ceremony, and on Thurs. & Fri. they're taking us to Seoul overnight to visit/tour the Seoul English Villlage. It's almost like having a week off with an 'expenses paid', mini-vacation thrown in. |

First time I've heard of this for those employed by a public school. I liked to be helpful too but, unless your entire office/teaching co-workers are doing this, I think you are being bullied. Unless you are a tried and proven valued member of the team, I seriously doubt your school's kahuna would get you to tote water.
Conjure up "far away" appointments. |
