I hate accumulation! If you go to California, you will see 3 car garage homes with the cars parked outside because junk fills the garage. That is accumulation.
I like Thoreau and Emerson's suggestions of a simplified life. Also, I waiting for baggage in airports. I just hate lugging baggage around.
Each time I go on holiday to Thailand, I have a day pack full of my necessities and NO luggage. More than once I got into a much shorter line to check-in because I only had hand-carry.
I try to keep my life simple and my philosophy is to own a few things, but what I own needs to be of good quality.
I have an IPod which takes care of CD's and lots of books as I have tons of audiobooks on it. My IPod travels with me. Because I go to warm climates I just take shorts and T shirts.
If I can't carry it then I have too much.
Yes, you are right. I am not married. I could not tell that story were I married. If I ever get married the traveling light days will be over. |

I'm a packrat and have all kinds of treasures to bring memories and inspire me.
But when I travel I take a 35 liter bag and I'm good for months. |

I cross the Pacific a couple times a year & never travel with more than a light carry-on bag.
No check-in lines, no baggage claim wait, no lugging. In & out of airports is a walk in the park. |

Forgive my bluntness, but it seems:
You're like a walking ad for Apple computers! Having an IPod might be part of avoiding accumulation, but it isn't what Thoreau was getting at with the idea of simple living!
All those hours spent learning and using new technology is better spent hiking the hills, Thoreau would say, since there aren't many lakes in Korea to imitate Walden as a part of nature to walkabout and explore, to listen to rather than tune out with hi-tech gadgets.
As Thoreau said: "A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone. And beware of all enterprises that require a new set of clothes. Men have become the tools of their tools."
I don't wanna learn how to use an IPod and spend the time searching, downloading and storing on it, fiddling with the thing. I do the minimum as it is with computers.
But maybe you are living deliberately, more important than simplicity for Thoreau. You have the latest popular gadget and lots of disposable income, travelling as a well-off tourist with high quality goods, as you admit yourself. Consumerism meets simplicity. A post-Thoreau concept. |

Maybe it's a girl thing but I can't do the carry on thing for anything other than a weekend trip. Make up, changes of outfit, and a couple of pairs of shoes mean I need luggage space. |

Yes, I stand corrected again. Well my IPod is simple to use, very people friendly. However, I am sure Emerson and Thoreau would not have owned one. But, in some ways, it does simplify my life, as in making it simpler. Sometechnology does simplify things. Anyway, you seemed to have understood my meaning. I will accept living deliberatly.
By the way Craztmongirl, I went to To Thailand for 2 months with only carry-on. |

I can manage for a couple of weeks with just a backpack- IF I'm going to a warm climate. Sweaters and jeans take up lots more space though |

Travelling light is the only way. I loate checking luggage and dragging it around the world and even away for the weekend. I think it makes it more fun to see how little you really need to survive...adds a bit of a challenge. |

Nah, even the five dollar a night hotels I stayed at in Sri Lanka had laundry services, and a stick of deodorant can fit into a bag pretty easily. |

1 - Set out all the clothes you think you'll need.
2 - Put half of them back in the closet.
3 - Pack the rest.
4 - Bring more money. |

In every country there are places where you can get good clothes cheap - whether it be Wal*Mart back home or Dongdaemun here. Jeans, socks, t-shirts, plain white/blue dress shirts, are the kind of items nobody really notices, and there's no need to pack expensive ones from home. Clothes have a tendency to get thrown away on the return trip to make room for books + gadgets one has acquired, anyway.
The only "nice" clothes I'll bring with me are a couple of sweaters or brand name shirts, and a jacket, even for an entire year abroad. The fact of the matter is, I could be wearing wal-mart shoes, socks, trousers, underwear, and t-shirt, with an LLBean sweater, and all anybody would notice was the sharp looking sweater. |
