I am trying to check out a school in Jinju, but I have no clue what the name is. The recruiter won't tell me, so I'm just wondering if anyone worked there. Are there some schools that you would definately warn against working?
All I can tell you is it's a mixed adult - kids hagwan.
They gave me an email address to contact, but it came back a dead end.
So far, it's not looking good. |

That's rediuculous.... you have every right to know the name of that school. Tell your recruiter you will not consider any job offers from schools that withhold their name.... what are they hiding? |

The name of the school. "Ah school x has a vacancy. I can go through the recruiter or I could just email them directly and cut the recruiter out of his fee." |

I liked JinJu.
But yeah, any recruiter that withholds the name of the place you might be spending the next year of your life is probably trying to set you up for something not so good. |

It is standard recruiter practice to withhold the name of the school as you can just cut him out and he loses his recruiter fee as the school is more than happy to do it for free...
I wouldn't be suspicious of that just yet....however the emial thing could be a problem |

I am aware of the reasons why the recruiter would withold the school name. That is why it's so important to talk to a previous teacher and so far they've given me a dead end.
The director wants me to call him however.
I suppose it couldn't hurt to see what I think of the guy.
I noticed some blacklisted schools in a place called 'chinju'.
Would that be the same city?
Anyway, I am not prepared to sign anything yet. |

I loved Jinju and would recommend anyone live there, it's easily the prettiest city in Korea and has prejudiced me against the concrete eye-sores that are the rest of Korean cities. Sometimes regret I left.
While you're there, in the weekends make sure to relax in all the temples or the castle that will have no-one there and only be 5 minutes from your house. If you're from the city like me, you cherish being able to escape from all the city noises. Now in Busan, I'd have to spend hours on the subway and/or bus to get away from it all. In the weekends go hiking or on 40km mountain-bike rides like I did, the geography seems tailor-made for it.
As for the institutes, I worked at Jinju ECC and hated it, and not just because of the half-day Saturdays. But that was 4 years ago, so in all fairness it may have changed completely. And unless the director has had a sex-change, then she's not the director you spoke to anyway.
Good luck! |

HA HA!! Agree with you there about the scenery and geography around Jinju. I loved the city. But as for work- Ha.... I finished my contract at the famous ECC only last year. I was pretty sure that the director had already HAD a sex change and was made female. But not very successfully.
Typical fire-breathing reptilian director, but at least she paid on time. Took some sort of warped reassurance in the fact that whatever crap she dished out to the foreigners, she treated the korean staff worse.
At least she always paid on time. But I can still recall the room temperature noticably dropping and the clouds of doom gathering over the school everytime she came in to check on the teachers..... You could always tell which of the ubiquitous tinted-window equus sedans was hers approaching the school........ it was the one followed by a squarking flock of evil cackling red-eyed ravens..... Any kids not quick enough to run terrified for cover inevitably ended up crushed beneath the wheels and/or turned to stone.
Funny thing is, I actually ran into her a few months back and she suddenly seemed really nice....
Actually in hindsight she was okay. She paid on time which is more than alot of other places.... Never had to worry about money. And she never made the foreign teachers cry- just the koreans...
The saturdays work was only at the main campus in shinandong and no longer occurs.
Can you at least ask what suburb your school is in? There is one in Shinandong with a male director with a bad reputation.... Knew a few female teachers there last year who had troubles... |

I was in the TESOL program at GSNU for four months. I also really liked Jinju. The castle is a neat place to hang out and people watch. Many times I'd sit in the big pavillion by the river and read for hours. It is a nice place to just get away from everything else.
I've got some great pictures too. |

Sounds like a great place to be. Too bad things are not going well with this school...........I can't get any straight answers from them.
Oh well, I have an interview in Busan today, wish me luck.
Cheers |
