I speak American. I also speak English pretty well since I picked it up when I lived there a few years back.

Maybe they are asking cause they think you are Irish. Like:
"Where do you live?"
"I live in AnnnDoooong"
"Oh, do you speak American (and aside under the breath: not that elongated Irish-like vowel movement)?"
Maybe you create some confusion so they are confused about where to mark you in geographic-linguiistic terms.
Sometimes we hear,"Boosh lala fallama" and we naturally presume Arabic. But what if we study Arabic and hear that. Wouldn't we think "Where on Earth is that and so ask, "Do you speak Iraqian?" |

Do you say "trunk" or "boot"? "Elevator" or "lift"? "I got drunk" or "I got pissed"? If you choose the first, you're American (possibly Canadian!!  ) but if you choose the second, you're a Brit!  |

I think it's about time we start calling it American. It didn't become the world language because of England's efforts, that's for sure.

Well, it was the British Empire, like it or loathe it, that spread the language through Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. America has just taken over the Brits mantle for the last 60 years. The official language of India, Pakistan and Nigeria is English (countries arguably ranked 1st, 3rd and 4th in terms of population of English speakers), and I don't that the US had much to do with the English in those countries 150 years back. |

Nonsense. We had everything to do with it. God created England yes, but he created it for the sole purpose of begetting America.  |

There was no such thing as 'you'. That's what the war was all about, doh! Britain beat itself. And besides, Britain became even more powerful in the 19th Century so the loss of the American colonies wasn't much of a problem.
North Vietnam won a "lil war" too, I believe. The Vietnamese don't live on a diet consisting solely of burger, fries and coke - and they're more beautiful. That's why they won. They also don't have a chimp as a president.
The English language is spoken by 900 million people worldwide despite there being only 47 million Englishmen. I could go on, but I think that paints a fairly clear picture.

I am Irish Eamo.
Got no problem with 'American' but was asked twice in a very short period of time if I spoke the afore mentioned. Kinda bugged me, certain amount of arrogance to it, especially since most of us were hired as English teachers or instructors or whatever we're called. |
