As someone mentioned, we haven't had any military accidents to cause local uproar, and the Koreans appear overdue for their semi-annual 'national reason to hate foreigners.'

Now, it seems that anti-Canadian teacher stories are starting to happen in the press, both in Korea and back home in Canada. It is taking its toll on Canadian job-hunters as well.

Is this Canadian hubris?

Are we paying for the crimes committed by those illegals we ignored, while arrogantly living off of our 'Canadians are loved by everyone' beliefs?

As a large number of Canadians are being caught with illegal degrees, and it will most surely be highlighted in the local press at some point, perhaps it is time that we realize we have been turning a blind-eye to Canadian issues in Korea for too long?

There are other issues tearing down our reputation. On the Canadian embassy website, we can find quotes like this: 'Most Canadians detained in this country are arrested because of violation of Drug related laws. '

http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/world/embassies/korea/workinkorea-en.asp

Also, we find articles like this, entitled, 'The Canadian Drug Train to Asia' in the Asia Pacific Post:

http://www.asianpacificpost.com/news/article/535.html

With press like this, I have to wonder. Will a Maple Leaf soon be a mark of shame that we won't want to wear in this country?

Maybe we should throw a big 'Canada appreciates Korea' party? We need some positive press here. I don't care to see my country's reputation dragged through the dirt.

For what it's worth, this Canadian will be sewing an American flag on his backpack.

word.

why sew anything really? there are plenty of non-combative countries that no one spends their time dissin' and you don't see those nationals proclaiming their nationalities on their backpacks (which are tacky anyway...get a murse) en masse. it strikes me as quite pretentious that people want to annouce where they are from to EVERYONE who looks at you so as to garner smiles and "oh thank god, you're not from ameeerica....canadians are sooooo nice...welcome to corea."

What's that German word for enjoying the suffering of others? Schadenwhenthewormturnsfreude?

I like the word hubris in this context.

Main Entry: hubris
Pronunciation: 'hy-br&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Greek hybris
: exaggerated pride or self-confidence

My Haggy will not hire Canadians because of their "drug and fraud" rep. It's not saying much, we're a small Haggy, but I, as an American had to chuckle when he told me this.

Ask a Canucklehead with a maple leaf on their jacket/backpack and 9 times out of 10 that tool is from the Maritimes or Ontario. We don't do that sheeat in BC.

Usually the most anti-American Canadians are from out east too.

They know they have no REAL culture down east. Cool

Well, being from Ontario I agree we don't have much of a culture. We are the culture of McDonald's and Tim Hortons donuts. But Quebec and the Maritimes certainly have rich and unique cultures as far as North America goes.

Stuff it, hippie! We in Ontario are too busy working hard so that the govt can 'redistribute' our taxes to you- you won't find us hugging trees and nosing through cow paddies in farmers' fields looking for hallucinogenic fungii. Razz

Here Here for Ontario and Tim Hortons...I sure could use one large cup of that this morning!!

I think it sucks that because of maybe a few bad apples the rest of Candians are stereotyped and possibly discriminated against.

It's usually the person and not where they are from that lies the problem. The way I look at it is if you don't like Canadians than don't hire them, we'll go elsewhere. Rolling Eyes

I see nothing wrong with sewing a flag on your packpack or wherever. Proud to be a Canadian and not knocking any other country. Nuff said.

Canada bashing is just the latest trend....soon they will realise that a few pot smoking Canucks arent as bad as American crackhead gun toting crystal meth addicts and things will return to normal.
