One of the recruiters I'm using sent me an email yesterday asking that I send him a picture of me in a suit (not the issue) and with my goatee shaven off. He said he wants his applicants to have a better reputation. Also the email is worded so this might not be a request to improve my chances, but would be a requirement for him to continue shopping around for me. I've had my goatee for nearly 4 years and am rather fond of it.

Here, I'll let you read it:

Could you send me a picture whch is taken by yourself with a formal suit?

If it is taken without mustache, it will be better.

Please understand this matter.

I want my applicants have better reputation.

If you feel bad with this, I am really sorry about that.

I think you can meet my requirement.

Thank you and have a great day

So does this mean I really need to in order to get a job, or just that it might make his job a little easier? I'm working with another recruiter and he hasn't mentioned it once.

Also, I suppose this is a good a time as any to ask about dress code. Is business casual acceptable, slacks, button-down shirt and tie, or am I going to need to have actual suits for work? If I've got to buy 3 or 4 suits for this, that's going to hit my budget hard.

Thoughts?

It's all about introducing cultural diversity. Koreans could do with a lesson on it. Keep the goatee.

I talked to him about it, he said I could keep it. I keep it trimmed and neat, I definately don't look like a hippie. My hair is short and well groomed as well. I grew it in the first place because I have somewhat of a baby face and the facial hair adds a bit of maturity to my appearance. I would consider shaving it off if it was some kind of a deciding factor in a school that I wanted to work at, but am going to leave it otherwise.

Thanks for the help.

Shave it, it will be the best thing you ever do. Dont be a hippie all your life, at a certain age you really need to grow up and set your priorities straight.

I disagree. Your work is an important part of your life, but don't let it change you too much.
Also, if it was good enough for Jesus, almost every great philosopher, and King Sejong the Great, then why the heck shouldn't you have it too!

Seriously though, in my experience, having what is cornily referred to as 'designer stubble' never gave me any problems here, both in teaching and the job I have now. Dress well, act well, work hard, and you'll have no trouble.
You may find though that people think you're older than you really are, which might be depressing! I'm 23, and I've been told by many Koreans that I look a good 5 years older, whenever the fuzz is in full effect.

The hagwon is probably going to show your photo to the parents and students (especially if their prior foreign teacher has already finished working) to convince them that yes, a new teacher really is coming. If you want to help the hagwon out, take a nice picture that doesn't make you look like a serial killer to Korean parents eyes. It's not about dress code or about what is fair to you, it's a nice gesture that can earn you points with your new employer.

PS: I'm sure you'll look better without it.
