I find most reptiles and amphibians taste like chicken, supporting the theory that they and other birds evolved from reptilian dinosaurs.
Cows are pretty docile. They probably became easily domesticated. Also, they have big, hanging, udders - an obvious source of milk. Well, maybe not obvious to primitive man. I wonder what gave humans the idea to start pulling on a cow's teat. Glad they figured it out, though. |

I��ve had dolphin��.real dolphin. The way to eat it is to salt and cure it, not sure what else��my great aunt did it��it turns a very greasy black color. then you slice it up and munch on it with salt, lemon, tomatoes, and crackers. It is absolutely delicious. You can also make something similar with sea lion.
but my favorite is buffalo burgers...
least favorite is rabbit. bony as hell. blech. |

I don't know if the recipes here match what I grew up eating, but there are few breads any better than a good hushpuppy. I don't know how they made them where I lived, but they were delicious. Always present at any fish fry. Guess you need to know what that means, too:

However, my understanding of the term is as a social event, like a public picnic, but with family and friends. Ours were typically paired with some drunken boating, some boiled crab, watermelon and, of course, Beer Ball!
Beer ball is nothing more than softball with beer. hit the ball, run, drink at each base you make it to. You have to take your beer, of course. Simple.
For us it was usually kids vs. the adults. No beer for us, which was fine at the time. Sadly, we still usually lost even with all that beer being guzzled. |

| A hushpuppy sounds like it would be good sopping up some gravy. I know I like cornbread for the same reason. |

Now I'm scared...
We've got EFLTrainer talking about eating catfish and hushpuppies?!?
Next thing you know, he'll be talking about eating NC Barbecue, Brunswick Stew, and having a pig pickin'.
I totally hear you on the fish fry, though. God, I miss those. (Though, not as much as a pig pickin'.) |

I'm not getting why these would be mutually exclusive?
NC barbeque, no, but baked NC corn, yes. Hanging out in the tobacky barns in winter, yes. Catching, though not eating, crawfish, yes. |

I suppose so, but gravy wasn't typically part of a fish fry as it's a picnic, basically. Usully not much in the way of salad and such, either. Slaw was pretty common, though. It was all back in my youth... I may be forgetting some things.
I left out swimming, to. Usually the kids spent a good bit of the afternoon in the water while the food was cooking. Big wash tubs of fish (usually catfish, but any kind will do) in oil, crab boiling in seasoned water, hushpuppies dep frying...
There are few more pleasant ways to spend a day. |

See, that's the thing. Water Buffalo are among the most aggressive animals on the planet. Who tried catching one first?  Suppose they started with young'uns. |

Modern day cows are descended from water buffalo? But water buffalo milk is pink! Well, the water buffalo milk I've seen, anyway.

Didn't mean in that sense. Cows came from somewhere, though. I assume some wild thingy or other with horns. |

Yes it is. I believe that it originated from Sicily��it��s called mushame or something like that. Many Sicilian immigrants in South America and Europe eat it. |

I can imagine you can get catfish here. Don't get me wrong, a good fish fry with hushpuppies and catfish is the best. But they are bottom feeders- and they tend to sop up tons of pollutants- and there are certainly tons in Korean rivers.
In the book Catfish and Mandala, written by a Vietnamese American, he tells the story of his father being in prison camp, and having to use a squatter which hung out over a little lake. The guys would dump, and the catfish would come swarming around for the feast. Then the catfish would become dinner. Yummmmm.  Instant recycling.
And how will you make the hushpuppies? Got some cornmeal? I brought some back from Thailand- you have given me an idea, but I think I'll try a different fish. |
