I guess I'm tired of studying Modern Korean History and want to stir things up...

Tell you the honest truth, when I see a woman smoking on the street, after over 9 years in Asia, the first thing I think is "trashy". That goes for Western women, too. And no, the ladies I walk past who sit outside Taco and Thunder Burger and Buddha's Belly and Istanbul slouched in the chair with a beer and their too short shirts revealing their not-flat bellies with a butt in one hand... you just don't want to know what I think.

One part of me says "that's wrong, if a man can smoke outside, so can a woman" but the other side of me says "men who smoke look like morons who want to smell disgusting and die of lung cancer, too." So maybe it's just cause I'm so anti-smoking. But still...

The sexist aspect is wrong, but any smoker looks like an idiot and I like to live in a fantasy world where women aren't idiots. So I don't like seeing women smoking on the street.

What bugs me even more in Korea than seeing people smoking outside is get gassed with second-hand smoke that you find in the women's toilets, where there are NO SMOKING signs everywhere, but ashtrays are provided in the cubicles!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
That's definitely trashy, having to 'sneak' a smoke in the loos.
So I prefer seeing women smoking outside - they do so in Japan and for some reason they don't look as trashy as the people at home who are crowding around the doors of their smokefree building in groups, shivering in the cold...

When I was in Japan we got seated next to an older couple and the women was smoking. My first thought was 'good for you' but that was quickly replaced by 'eww get that stink smoke away from me.'

I've never understood why people take up smoking, it looks stupid, it's smelly, it tastes bad (smokers have funky tasting spunk), and it kills you.

I don't like smoking, but women who sleep around (IMO) are far more trashy and disgusting than women who smoke.

I've always liked seeing women smoking,
I mean, if they're willing to put THAT in their mouth,
what else would they be willing to put in there?

IMHO

It never used to matter to me, but after a few years in Korea, I actually find women who smoke more attractive. I guess I see it as a sign of refusing to follow the herd.

And no, I'm not a smoker (anymore).

As a smoker myself I can't complain if a woman smokes... I'd prefer if women didn't smoke, but that's unfair... So, if women want to smoke in the street, that's good - not simply because they are smoking, but because they are exercising their freedoms to do so if they wish... Who sets out these unwritten cultural rules - "women can't smoke in the street!" The men? Women who don't smoke to begin with? Blah... Too many rules for women...

Remember what kids said in high school? If they smoke, they poke.

I agree with you, it does look trashy. But I'm speaking only of Korean women. This is Korea, and "trashy" is how it looks according to the standards of public decency of this society. Like blowing your nose in a restaurant. Not "trashy" according to my personal standards before I got here, not according to the accepted standards of a Western society, but to Korea's own. (FWIW, Korean "event girls" look as trashy as smoking-in-the-street girls to me, though that's a case of Korean society progressing -- or degenerating? -- beyond my own sense of propriety and good taste.)

As for Western women smoking in the street (or anywhere -- I make no distinction in their case between the street, the bar or the bedroom) my reaction is very different and many more factors come into play. A lot will depend on how a Western girl is dressed, how she presents herself, and if she looks like she might be intelligent or deep. If, in addition to smoking, she dresses slummy or slutty or looks feral, then yes, "trashy" comes very close to mark.
