Hey, I will be going to Thailand most likely over Xmas and am determined to avoid my old stomping ground of Phuket and vicinity to see something new. I have spent a lot of time in Samui as well as the whole Phuket-Krabi area so that area is out. Has anyone been to Koh Chang? I have been getting mixed results, some say it's trashy, but I lived in Patong for 3 years so my viewpoint could be different. I don't want Pattaya style, and I do want beach time, so any thoughts or opinions? Hua Hin is also a possibility, and it has to be Thailand as I will be bringing my girlfriend who is Thai back here at the week's end.

Thanks.

I have been to Koh Chang about 5 times and I like it. It's quite quiet and the only party place is White Sands (which is like a mini Pattya). Lonely beach is nice, but is becoming less lonely. The tree house has finally moved to a more secluded part of the island, away from the constant development. The tree house has basic accomodation but excellent food and a nice vibe. The island is very mountanous and is dangerous for riding motorbikes. I had my only ever motorbike accident there. Allow about a day to get there from Bangkok.

Enjoy, it is rapidly changing now that Thaksin and his cronies have bought up a lot of land.

I spent a few days there a couple summers ago and had a great time. Beautiful beaches but not much in the way of nightlife if that's what you're into. Elephant riding, snorkelling and swimming under the waterfall were good times there.

Sounds good, I don't need the party scene, I'll spend a couple of days in Bangkok. Just a bar or restaurant near the beach with some music and Singha will be perfect. Thanks.

Also what is the accommodation like at the treehouse? I don't need five star but I do like a place where the mosquito net is an option rather than a necessity.

It's basic, or maybe rustic is a better word. I would stay at lonely beach at Natures Rocks. The only bungalows with air con are in White Sands or there is one very expensive place on L Beach. Bunglows at N way are about 400bht. Treehouse cheaper. Flash place about $120US.

Natures are clean, simple with attached bathroom and fan.
