My Neighbour and friend has internet acces on one pc in his house. WHat do I need so I can access it next door with my wireless enabled laptop?
do i need a wireless router or just a wireless access point or an access point and router?
i want it to work so that he doesnt have to have his PC turned on all the time.

If he doesn't already have a wireless router, then you'll have to buy him one. Then you'll have to buy him a wireless LAN card for his PC to connect to the router, as well. The router should have English instructions for you if you buy one of those internationally recognized brands like Linksys or D-link. If your laptop already has the hardware built into it, all you have to do is connect to the network he has running in his house. |

If the access point you buy also acts as a router your neighbor could simply plug into that and forego the wireless card on his system. Might simplify the arrangement and keep your costs down.

PS: If you're right next door it shouldn't be a problem but be aware that consumer wireless is low wattage so while it may work fine over 500 meters or more of radio line of sight a few walls will usually kill the signal or degrade it past the point of pleasant use. Try to minimize the walls between the AP and your computer. Having said that I live on the 11th floor of my building and can access my wifi from the parking lot with a fair amount of signal degradation. |
