For those of you looking for an English speaking hairdresser in Daegu, here are directions to a shop called Toto in the downtown area (about a 5-10 min. walk from Burger King. The owner used to one of my friend's students and has cut both my friend's and my hair many times before. Here are the directions starting from Burger King near Daegu Department Store in the downtown area.
Start at BK - go in the direction like you would be going to Kyungbuk Hospital. to know you are going in the right direction,you should see the Body Shop on your right, and the department store on your left side.
Keep going straight, you will pass "Lloyd", you will come to an intersection with Pizza Mall on your right side and Seattle Coffee on your left side and Gong Pyoung Yak Gook (the sign reads Pharmacy Gong pyoung Yak gook since 1963) the name of the pharmacy is in Korean "gong pyoung yak gook" on your right as well. This pharmacy is on a corner. You will turn right and go down that road past 2 intersections. at the first intersection you should see a shop called "Solo", the section intersection has a Baskin Robbins. After the second intersection if you keep going the road looks like it dead ends. This is the area you need to be in. You will see Laden (great coffee shop BTW - foreign friendly owner) on a second floor left hand side. Shortly after this you will see a shop called Toto Hair Shop on the second floor under a shop called "IeD". her sign is faded but used to red. Her english is okay although she will tell you it is not. Her shop is on a corner so you have to turn left and very shortly after that you go up the wooden steps near IeD. If you are with a Korean friend, the area it is in used to be called "fox street" 4 years ago. Hope this helps. The hair dresser is the "wangjangnim"(owner of the shop)

Lots of good english-speaking hair stylists on the street leading up to Camp Walker. As well as english cell phone outlets, travel agents (kangsantravel.com has opened up an office on that street), and western clothing stores. All taxis will know this area by you simply uttering 'Camp Walk-uh'.

East gate. Gate #6. That's usually the default main gate to a taxi driver, when saying that you want to go to Camp Walker, unless you specify otherwise, as Gate #4 is traditionally considered to be the back gate. If they're not sure, you can say 'Camp Walk-uh, chung moon'.

Anyone know if the Burger King place or the Camp Walk-Uh places are good at colouring too? I want blonde highlights, am wary of getting the browny peroxide look a lot of asians have.

And also I'd prefer to go to a place that does a better job razoring blunt ends and coloring but speaks less English than a crappy place that speaks good English.

I'm heading out in a couple hours to search for a hairdresser.. eep.

I have a set of hair clippers and they are the best purchase that I have ever made. When my hair is getting too long, I just give it a zing. Even the back isn't too terribly dificult to do by myself.

So I went to Toto's yesterday. It was easy to find. I've been trying to find someone here who can give decent cuts and colours AND speaks english. I thought this wangjangnim would be the one. She showed me the swatches but they were all much too dark. I pointed to a girl on the cover of magazine with platinum blonde hair and indicated I wanted highlights, not a full head dye. She nodded and quickly began.

Well, the dye they used didn't smell like ammonia (like it should) and when they took off the foils, it looked almost the exact same brown it did before! I was surprised. Later, she told me that each day, my hair would get lighter. I asked how long it would take, she said 'one month.'

I asked around and there is no such thing as self-lightening dye. The dye should look platinum blonde now, but it looks like they didn't do a thing to it. It sounds like she didn't have the right colour on hand (makes sense, as asian girls prefer those brownish highlights, rather than blonde), and made up the story. She seemed super nice and had this good recommendation here on Dave's ESL so I'm pretty disappointed she didn't straight up tell me she didn't have the colour. I can't believe she still charged me the full $30. And I was gullible enough to think this was some special asian technology dye and paid the full price.

Oh well, at least I got a half-decent $30 haircut (Without the dye it would have been $9).

Moral of the story: Objectively speaking, if you want someone who gives you a quick, simple haircut, go to her. If you want anything more complicated than that, and if you want someone who is trustworthy about what she does, don't go to her. And personally, I'd prefer if people didn't go to her because I'm pretty annoyed at wasting my time and money and being lied to.

I have been to Felia on the 8th floor of Lotte Department Store at Daegu Station twice and have been quite happy with the colour and cut. Jenny is the woman who cut and coloured my hair. They even gave me the candle wax hand treatment for free. I brought in pictures of cuts and colour that I liked and ones that I didn't like (too blonde, to layered, etc.). From these she was able to get an idea of what I was after. Although she doesn't speak much English, she was able to figure out what I wanted. It was about 70,000 for colour and a cut. I think it is 20,000 just for a cut. They use Wella products. I don't like the razor style scissors that they use here because it thins out my hair way too much, so you might have to ask her not to use them. Anyway, I was really happy with the results both times that I went there, so I hope if you try it you will be also.
