The thread on name your favorite Korean food got me thinking. There are several restaurants that I know of that are beyond the pale in terms of location, food and decor.

For those of you that live in Anyang here are the directions to one of my favorite places that specialise in Sanchae Bibimbab. From Hogwan road in Pyeongchon head straight down the road towards Anyang Stadium. Continue straight through the intersection past the stadium on your left and follow the road. Finally the road will seemingly end at an army base in Pisan Dong. Never fear, at the right of the army base road is a small concrete road winding into the farmland. Follow this road until you get to the restaurant I'm talking about. You can't miss it, it's made of traditional building materials of mud, straw and bamboo. Outside are a waterwheel, small zoo, covered wagon, pots, sculptures, farming implements..

The place is much bigger than it seems and is made up of a maze of tiny corridors and private dining rooms scattered haphazardly about. You can also choose to eat outside amongst the candle lit tables hidden on the hillsides. The food is really amazing and they make fantastic seafood pancakes. And don't forget to feed the monkey, rabbits, peacocks, chickens, dogs and quails outside when you leave.

HIGHLY recommended!

It sounds gorgeous, but I'm a little worried that the monkeys outside may end up on my plate.

This isn't amazing or anything, but I laughed at a chicken-shack on my way to work this morning called "Holy Holy Chicken." Blessed fresh every morning!

And I'd worry that he or she wasn't receiving proper care and was being exploited as a stupid gimmick for the restaurant. Monkeys aren't pets, and if they have to live in captivity they need a proper sanctuary that fully understands their needs and can provide some semblance of a natural environment.

That's absolutely depressing.

I can't top the OP, but the place that sells mushroom stew in Hongdae is pretty cool.

I don't know if they have a menu, but if so there's only one thing on it- loads of vegetables, mushrooms and chillies in a broth that you cook at the table. When it gets near the end, an ajumma comes and throws some rice and seaweed into the pot, and stirs it up to make fried rice.
Eat, enjoy (the kimchi is ace), sweat, then get out to make way for the people waiting in the queue outside.

It's near the sidestreet of OTwo, a one floor yellow building painted with disney characters.

The restaurant next door has cheap lobster too.

Yeah, I live near it, and we go there regularly. We call it the "Dong-dong ju Place." It has the best smoked chicken. Tastes like bacon. The food is outstanding, and the view and booze... Mmm... It's a good place to stop at after hiking the mountain.

I think everyone who lives in relative countryside has a dong dong ju place where the food is fine and the liquor even finer......

Ddong ddong ju is the stuff of the gods
