I'd be surprised if it actually was the case.
Any Canadian who thinks for one second that this is somehow the fault of Korea needs to give her head a shake. What a bizarre argument. Canadians are breaking the law in Korea, and it's Korea's fault they're treating these Canadians like the criminals they actually are?
There's so much wrong with the tone of the Globe and Mail article, starting with this:
Speaking from his family home in Barrie, Ont., Andrew Dekker, 28, described the chain of events that led Canadians like him to be jailed in Korea alongside illegal factory workers from Pakistan and China.
Oh, the horror!!! Did some third world cooties rub off on the first world Canadian while he was forced to sit near them in close quarters?

One of the things I found amusing about the discussion on Dave's was when people defended the Globe's journalism by appealing to its reputation as Canada's premiere newspaper.
The Globe is my regular paper when I'm back in Canada. Yeah, it's okay, usually better than the Southam papers and certainly better than the Post. However, it is by no means immune to parochialism, bandwagonism, or incomplete presentation of the facts. On a bad day, it's not so far removed from the Korea Herald. |
