It's amazing to see the pictures of relatively modern cities that are never talked about, with names rarely heard. Makes one think about how many multi-million populated cities fall under the radar of travellers who wish to avoid tourist traps. Abidjan, Luanda, Kampala, Douala, Yaounde, Port Louis, etc. Most of us can't even say what countries they are in, let alone know there's over a million per.
The same could be said of Daegu, Gwangju, Daejon, Ulsan.
At the same time, every country has its rich folks and government worker sections with concrete and apartments. And those pictures start blending together after a while, looking like just one big ubiquitous mass of urbanity. Like nothing special.
Except the pics of Antananarivo, Madagascar are amazing!! I mean, the city architecture and layout on the hill around the bay is spectacular.
Thanks. |

Nice pics there Tiger beer... Any African city looks great from a distance, due to the usualy brilliant whitewashed buildings, the clear air and sunlight, the colorful trees and vegetation, the daily pretty sunsets.
heres the ones I know with my brief impressions...
Johannesburg, South Africa
A really bustling city, but definitely dangerous. Walking the streets is risky nowadays. Be prepared to drive long distances everywhere, public transport is a no no. A nice recreation lake, golf course, and enclosed shopping centre, also numerous good bars and clubs.
Cape town
So beautiful and relatively peaceful. CT has it all: wonderful beaches and mountains, a lively shopping / pub/ bar area, great fresh fish restaurants at the docks.
Bulawayo , Zimbabwe
Hard to find a good picture- but this city has an olde world colonial-type charm. Taking steam train into and out is a great experience. Broad streets designed wide enough for a span of oxen to turn around. Colorful jacaranda trees everywhere in season. Love it.
Mutare Zimbabwe
Spent 2 years here. Scenic, sprawling city. Very relaxed.
Harare Zimbabwe
Formerly busy corporate style city with wonderful sprawling avenues, shopping and nightlife. Great parks and sports clubs etc. Now rather dilapidated after 25 years of Mugabe's rule. |

Damn that's a beautiful pic of Capetown. Agree about j'burg. Definetly a place to watch your back. I remember we were driving somewhere and these guys were sitting in the back of a pick up truck waving at us. Lying next to them was a rifle |

I've always been intrigued by Asmara.. supposedly it was built by the Italians.. and has a strong Italian feel to it - complete with many Italian restaurants, etc.
In addition.. the people are essentially that incredible beautiful Ethiopian look.. dark milky skin, large eyes, thin nose, thin lips, etc.. Eritreans (and Ethiopians) are gorgeous people. |
