Hi guys
I've upped my fitness considerably since I got here and am really enjoying exercising. So i'm looking for some more interesting workouts. I'm starting swimming this week and am considering TaeKwonDo as a third "type" of work out.
I have a few questions
What is the cost? For the kit, for the lessons?
How slow is the progression? When I was a kid I got SO bored of Karate, 3 months of repeating one punch move over and over and over, I was there 4 months and only then were our class getting our first belts.
How much of a workout is it?
Can I go to places catering for ADULT novices, the ones I've seen seem kiddy orientated.
Thanks!

I've been to Taekwondo in Daegu and am considering joining in Seoul. They rush you through pretty quickly and you will most likely have a black belt in 9 months. for me, it was really interesting and I was always learing something new. Plus...it is one hell of a work out. It usually costs 70,000 W a month and the uniforn is about 30,000 W. |

Wow thats amazing.
How many times a week is it?
I'm already paying 60,000 a month for the gym and figure a swimming pool membership will set me back a decent amount too. |

Not to derride your trainers, but I question the value of any Black Belt obtained in only 9 months. Even with intensive training I just can't see how anyone can obtain a true mastery of their fighting system in such a brief time period. Even the most talented student should take a few years to ingrain the subtleties of the art into their subconscious in order to make their movements 'automatic' so to speak. It would be like a University handing out a Bachelor's Degree to someone who has only studied for one semester. |

I think that Koreans consider the 1st black belt to be the beginning and all the belts up to it are just the foundation. Schools in the US generally give the belts at a slower rate to bring in more money. I wouldn't doubt earning a black belt in 9 months, but if its only 9 months in between the 1st and 2nd degree black belt, then I would wonder.
As to the OP, why not try Hapkido. It's a lot more interesting and practical in my opinion. |

That's my understanding too - a black belt is merely mastering the basics.
Blunder - training is generally 5 nights per week. In a month I would have met the basic requirements it took me 3-4 months of karate to achieve. When you train frequently, you improve really quickly, so progression is quite quick.
The first place I trained at I was expected to train 5 nights per week and was always quizzed by the Sabom-nim if I was absent. It was a lot of fun and kept me fit. The training was hard and always varied, but I guess that all depends on your Sabom. |

Does it involve any meditation/ spiritualism/ ideological training? I wouldn't like that. |

I've been doing Taekwondo for two weeks now. If anyone is interested I belong to a nice club. It is 80,000/month but you can go any day of the week. The uniform is 50,000. It is a small class and you start doing kicks and not spending a whole class learning the proper technique. That is why you can get your black belt quicker than in the west. You spend more time actually doing the kicks and punches and less time on form. In 12 months you should be able to get your black belt. It is an amazing workout especially for the legs, buttocks and abs. Black belt here I come! |

I agree with you completely. But that is what it takes to receive a black belt. Some Sabos (teachers) will even try to push you through faster. The one guy in Daegu wanted me to go for my black belt in four months. I told him no. But 9 months is the norm. |

It is usually 5 times a week (Mon-Fri) for an hour each time. And this is probably one of the best workout programs I've had (not building muscle mass, but getting lean, fit and flexible).
They really push you, but if you are looking to get in shape, this is for you. I know in a gym I sometimes get lazy during workouts, so it's nice to get pushed once in a while IMO. |

Sorry if I came across as overly critical. As others have stated, 'native' Korean Dojangs clearly place different values onto their belt levels. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to these things.
I train in Wu Shu Kung Fu, and to reach even the lowest Black Sash level usually takes around five years of solid training. Different style, different belt value |

i have no idea about the belts, but i do know that the progress of a person doing something 1 hour/day, 5 days/week will will outpace the person doing 1 hour/week by much more than 5x.
can anyone recomend a gym in busan, preferably in yeonsan dong? |

of course martial arts are pointless unless you actually get to use your skills. Street fighting? hmm... |

Hi,
I have the 2-10 shift and am finding it hard to find classes to fit my schedule. Does anyone know any places that have Tae Kwan Do classes before noon, around the Sinchon area in Seoul?
Thanks,
M |
