It seems that in Korea an anonymous accusation made over the Internet is enough to get you in serious trouble with the law in this country.

This was posted on a police website recently here in Seoul.

Quote:
XXXX, who works at X University as an English instructor, is selling marijuana in Itaewon and to students at the university.

He teaches classes while high and has also blackmailed several students into making pornographic Intenet films with him.

A drug test will reveal marijuana in his urine and a raid on his apartment will uncover his stash.

Stop this piece of white trash from ruining more Korean people's lives.

Amazingly enough the police took this seriously, this was their reply.

Quote:
Thank you for visiting the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency(SMPA) Website.

We went the school and investigated about your statement. The person we investigated said that he wasn't connected the case. He felt victimized, then went to the severance hospital in Sin-chon in 5th of July. After that, he handed the result(ID 110688) whether he did marihuana or not to the university. The evidence shows he is not guilty. And also, we couldn't meet with good results through your report, so we are finishing your report.

Thank you.

Shocked

The accusation was made by a native speaker. What does that tell you about the quality of some of the people we are associated with?

I never thought I'd ever say this, but: in fairness to the native speaking community, the "snitch" is just one guy. It's the Seoul Metropolitan Police who allow unsubstantiated accusations against named individuals to appear on their website.

A korean female friend of mine was going through a bitter divorce. Her estranged husband went to the police with accusations of drug use. The police went to her apartment a dragged her in for a drug test at 2am. Kept her there until 6 am. Tested negative and that was the end of it.

What's the big deal?--if the guy's innocent.

Since so many expats do seem to be potheads though, I can see why some of you are getting all hot and bothered.

I didn't realise it was so easy to get the police to fight all your battles for you- anonymously, and by remote control!
I wonder if they investigate Koreans too, or only foreigners?

if the test comes back negative, shouldn't you be able to sue for defamation and libel?

But of course, since it's anonymous. . .wherein the problem lie: no recourse for the victim in this case, except to sue the police

There is a thing called probable cause and a random email or accusation shouldnt be enough for the police to start drug testing. How would you feel if the police showed up at your workplace telling you to piss in a cup?

come on folks- nobody can claim this wouldn't be a big deal if it happened to you. This system sucks, these cops should be sleeping back at the station as normal.

In KOrea????? Hahahaha.. suing for defamation and libel.....
And forget about suing the cops, even if they beat you inot submitting to a test, they's still win.
The only way to get justice in this country is to avoid the law at all costs.

Jumpin' Jesus on a pogostick, I can't believe they'd actually respond to such a post on their board.
Think of all the possibilities for some bad fun. You could put some people in some really uncomfortable positions. Hagwon bosses, annoying co-workers, snotty students......
