Shoes on or off inside the house?

Actually, I think its been hinted at before- weather. In muddy/snowy places it would be rude to wear you shos indoor. In the sunny areas however, why not?
I was raised that visiting someones house was a formal thing. Taking off your shoues, however, is highly informal. In other words, to remove your shoes at someone's house shows a high level of familiarity which may not be welcome and certainly isn't polite.

Interesting about the Canadians though, isn't it? I wonder if the Quebecois follow the lead of their froggy forebears and keep their shoes on indoors.
