It sounds like crap but I'd love to see them try to make it work. No doubt the foreigner would have one lesson a week with 40 kids to try to get them to think for themselves, sandwiched between the same old stuff they've always been getting.

I heard some Korean government teachers claim that the Korean Government has made a law that in 2008 Science, Ethics, Math, and Social Studies must be taught in English. Apparently they are going to hire native speakers who will assist in teaching in these subjects with a Korean partner teacher.

I would guess that those teachers were wrong. The Seoul government plans to have a native English speaker in each middle school by 2007, I believe. If they expect to find a native English speaker for every high school as well, I think they'll be having trouble.

Plus, each high school would need numerous native English speakers. Take my middle school for example. There are three Korean English teachers per grade, so a total of nine. Multiply that by five subjects (those above plus English), and that would be 15 native English speakers for my school.

Or maybe they'll cut out a few teachers by continuing to teach English in Korean as they do so well...

A hagwon where I used to livew does just this. English is not a subject for them, they just teach science and history in English. They only accept a very few students, but their results were amazing.

I thought this plan was only to be in certain schools in certain designated areas, like Jeju-do. Am I mistaken?

I don't know- it sounds freakish, but this is what four public school teachers were telling me about... Just think though if you were a philosophy major in Uni then you could actually say you were using it when teaching ethics. But, ethics classes also include some Korea patriotic lessons which might be hard for an American Imperialist to teach.

Heavens! Teaching Kant, JS Mill and Nietzsche vs Schoepenhauer to 14 year-old K-kids...in Englishy! It's difficult enough teahing them basic bloody English, never mind Ethics. I can just imagine..."Class, today we're gonna study Pragmatism vs Descriptivism, a central debate in Analytic Ethics".
