Sim City, that was it!
Thanks for the link.
It looks like there have been newer versions over the last decade or so. I am soooo tempted to get the newest version, 4. I'll try to figure out when it was made and whether a 5th version is coming out soon. I could put it on the office computer for those odd gaps in the schedule. |

| Perfectly legal. Its abandoned ware which means the licensing company no longer cares and now allows the distribution of the software legally. |

Just started downloading civ 4 off torrentit. Looks like it's available almost everywhere right now.
Still intend to buy a copy though. This game deserves to be paid for! |

A little heads up for those of you about to buy it: You may want to wait a few weeks. I just shelled out 50 bucks for it last night for my girlfriend and she got it home, installed it and it didn't work. It wouldn't run. She called Tech Support and she said the guy told her they've been taking calls all day about it. You may want to wait a bit until they come out with some patches. Apparently whatever the problem is, it's widespead.

I find that is an excellent rule of thumb for any pc game, unfortunately. The state of the industry seems to condone the release of incomplete and buggy products.
On the flip side, I waited too long to buy GTA: S.A. and now have a copy without a 'hot-coffee' mod capability. And I suppose that's just as well- I would have hated to let some explicit sex get in the way of my carjacking, running down pedestrians, thumpin' hoes, and shootin' folks in the face... |

| hey for those having trouble running it. I investigated and its because it has an emulator/burner detector (like star force). Run it through antiblaxx and it runs fine. |

Put disc 1 in your drive, instead of disc 2.
Fantastic game. Makes CIVIII look like the dark ages. |

Could you explain what that is, so I can tell her. I use a Mac so when it comes to problems on a PC, I have no idea.

I downloaded it, and unpacked it using WinRar. Then I used Daemon tools to mount it so that I wouldn't have to burn it. However, it kept asking for me to insert the dvd before it would let me play it. I looked online and found that if you download "safedisc 4 hider" that it will hide your emulator and work fine....which it does.
It's a good game. The tech tree is so different, that it's hard to know what to go for, and what to build in the towns. Without the 500 page instruction manual that comes with it, I find that I'm clicking on the help button a lot to explain things, like what do priests do, or great prophets, or why can I trade this but not that. It still seems a bit buggy, like you should be able to read the information about anything you want to by hovering the mouse over it, but sometimes it doesn't show up.
It's running fairly well, though, and I played it for way too long last night. |

When i fired it up the WHOLE WORLD was black and I nearly wept.
Instead I googled the problem, its common on pcs with naff gfx cards (i.e laptops) its something to do with the texture and lighting, means u cant see the world or people except their eyes and hands.
By disabling the fog of war (either play a scenario or google it for specifics) it now works fine. Except for the char portraits, but hey that gives it a neat halloweeny twist!
Oh and yeah it does rock, I'm miffed about doing the novel in november now, it'll eat into my civ4 time!! |

Ok, essentially it breaks down as so. A few months ago developers got together and decided that the best way to prevent games being copied is to make it so that people with the abillity to copy can't use the games...yeah. This program is called star force. Basically it looks around and sees if you have any emulators or burners (alcohol 120, winiso, etc.) and then blocks you.
Antiblaxx http://www.dvhardware.net/software/2872 makes it appear as if you have none of that on your computer. Rather nice program anymore as it also acts a bit like an instant crack. First, download the program and start it up. Then right click at the bottom and select "settings". Under first game browse for the CIV IV.exe file (in the firaxis games folder). Select securrom 5 (maybe 7? It'll tell you if I'm wrong) and finish. Then right click again and select "run game-> Civ Iv" and there you are. Note, for some reason "tutorial" does not work- must be a different .exe file. |

He's talking about getting a "cracked" version, provided by hackers, to work.
You bought yours in a store, so this doesn't apply to you. Try putting disc 1 in the CD drive when you play, instead of disc 2. This was a bug in the version that I bought, which I was made aware of by the vendor that sold it to me. |
