I love Korea.
I personally feel that many of the Korean-bashers have issues with their own individual lives and instead of trying to fix it, turn outwards and attack the outside.
While Korean society has its problems, its really a great place to live in my opinion if you have a positive mind set.
At least for me anyways. |

For that matter, what idiot thought up Central America??? Where the hell does the one start and the other end? Are the cultures so very different between Costa Rica and Colombia?? Look at the damned Globe!! There's North and South. No freakin' Central!

and if they really care what we call the Sea of Japan/East Sea (even though it is not Korea's East Sea, I dont think they own it) why don't they learn the America is not a country, America is a continent, in fact there are two of them. I have to teach all my students (and teachers)that i am from the USA, and they dont understand, I have to write out United States of America, and underline USA, then I get the chorus of "ohhh." so figure the name of my country before you complain about an international body of water... |
Though I understand your thinking, it's a bit too late to change the fact that not only do citizens of the U.S. call themselves Americans, but they are called so in many different languages by people around the world, not just Koreans. |
The country is "The United States of America". What is adjective for a person from the USA?
Canada:Canadian
Mexico:Mexican
The United States of America:?
It would seem to me that "The United States of American" is, like parts of me, rather thick and unwieldy. USAsian? I don't begrudge Americans for, you know, calling themselves Americans. |
maybe I should have been clearer. I recognize that the adjective for a person from the US is American, what else would we be called, USan...
My point, is that America (not American) is not a country. ask any Canadian. I am from the US, or USA, not from America.
and like i said, not only was this wrong, but they were clueless when I say the USA. I never refer to Korea as Asia. or Koreans as Asians.
and honestly, I didnt care until I read this article.
but also, I dont hear France complaining because the English Channel is not the North Channel, or Norway complaining the North Sea is not the West Sea, I never complain the Gulf of Mexico is not called the Gulf of Texas... |
Oh, for goodness' sake. It's a freakin contraction. "United States of America" --> "United States of American" --> "... American." You are, in fact, from " ~ America", so get over it.
You want Yankees? Sorry, where is that in the name of the nation? How about Mid-North Americans! Or 'Tweenians, short for "Between Canada and Mexiconians." See to shining seaans? Non-Canadianians?
Get over it, folks. We chose an unwieldy name, people shortened it to not sound stupid as hell. That's it. |
Exactly. Where are you from? You can say "I'm from the United States of America". You can say "I'm from the United States". Or you can say simply "America". Or you can say "the States". Geez, an American doesn't want to say a mouthful doesn't mean he's laying claim to a whole continent (or in fact two continents north/south and a little middle part called central america...)
I really hate my fellow Canadians who get red assed about this. For every Canadian that gets red assed about America = USA, the same Canadian would be hard put to name the third country that makes up North America... "Oh Mexico is part of North America too?" |
oh my god, what have i done? I didnt think it was that big of a deal, maybe i will start to keep my mouth shut more....
but I can't wait to get back home to seattle, near the Paci... I mean West Ocean... |

Why should Koreans be worried about their country not being famous? Other than the USA, what country is well-known or somewhat understood around the globe? Even then, TV, movies and the news do not do it justice.
I know almost nothing about countries I have never been to, except a little about some countries I guess, just from reading or Tv, and meeting people from other places.
And how much do most Koreans know about Poland or Denmark or Brazil or ...... |

I don't know who pulled the numbers from the hat...but...6 million tourists?! I think not.
Jeju Island gets a mere 500,000 tourists a year....so...5.5 million more are visiting the mainland?!?!?
The numbers are being played...when teachers do visa runs...they are counted into the numbers also...when the U.S. military folks enter korea...they are also counted...those numbers alone average 30 plus thou a year...bringing family members, etc.
Most countries I suppose also inflate the numbers...but I would bet your life that 6 million individuals don't visit korea a year! If so..then it stands to reason that the world would have a better view of koreans..yes?
Korea would have a much better economy with 6 million tourists! And maybe even a better attitude toward foreigners with those high numbers! |

This is odd. Wouldn't it stand to reason that those who complain about the "American" thing are basing the complaint on some level of preexisting knowledge regarding North American geography and, as a corollary, be aware of Mexico's inclusion in North America?
Maybe you meant that 'For every Canadian that gets red assed about America = USA, as many Canadians would be hard put to name the third country that makes up North America... "Oh Mexico is part of North America too?"'
If that's the case, I still disagree, as I've never encountered it. Ever.
On the other hand, I've never read anything on this board which I agreed with more than this:

Korea is like a guy who you meet at a bar. At first he seems cool enough. But then he starts bragging about this and that. And he thinks its gonna raise your opinion of him. But of course it just makes you think, "jeez, this guy is totally insecure." And it's a shame, because he really is a nice guy. If he would just shut up. |

Lewiston Maineiacs vs. St. John's Fog Devils, November 17-18. It's gonna be a bloodbath!
Well, it'll likely be more of a friendly hockey game, but still good! |
