I'm downloading my latest drivers and DirectX software. I have system requirements well beyond their recommendations, but it is still hiccuping, especially when a video pops up. And with all the typos in the tutorial and Civipedia, and a few graphical snafus like horses sticking their heads inside of pyramids, it really does look like it was rushed out the door.

Still fun, and I plan to spend many a sleepless night playing -- if it doesn't crash too regularly.

That means that you don't have to spend hours playing a multiplayer game.

In SP I finished it under 5.5 hours.

Okay, spent a good weekend playing it. I like it, but it still feels like it was rushed. There, so far, have been things that have disappointed me about it. Specifically, it didn't feel like I was progressing through separate epochs of history, like Civ 3. I liked the way that Civ 3 would show a medieval city dissolve into an industrial city. In Civ 4, you get a piece of parchment with a picture drawn on it that says you've hit the Industrial Era -- and this even this supposedly simple graphic is hammering my video card.

One thing they did in Civ 3 was make the buildings in civilizations culturally unique. Asian buildings looked like Asian buildings. South American Indian buildings had their own unique look.

I just got through playing as the Chinese, and my medieval buildings looked like Rothenberg, Germany. Yeah, the music's different, but I think that's it. All the cultures are the same except for some stats, a special unit or two, and a little soundtrack.

I like the extra worker options and the work boats, making the sea a more playable field. And I like the little things like having military units automatically skip turns until they heal. I like having specific religions at play. And I also like the cultural booster shot you can give to a frontier city by having a Great Artist make a Great Work there.

Still, there's no reason for it to hog as much resources as it does. I'm not much of a programmer, but there had to be more efficient ways to make the game. In the end, it's still a chess game. And a chess game shouldn't kick your computer's video card like a Quake-Halo Flight Sim.

I got a 6600 go and when it gets a bit intensive around 1900 the game crashes every ten years.
