Well, I've enjoyed my Korean experience the last two years and even with a uni job here, I find it's time to leave and go back into engineering.

So the question is... Where should I go and why?

I've narrowed my list to the 4 in the poll so if you've lived in these places, can you please give me the lowdown.

I've read some very indepth descriptions of the character of that city, and you can too on dave's international forum.

It seems to be a nice place if you like drinking and shopping. Period.

Why'd people vote for it? Some detail would be nice.

based purely on weekend trips, I thought Hong Kong seemed like the patron city of ex-pats in asia whereas Shanghai was more foreign and uncompromisingly asian.

I really wouldn't like to say for sure, but out of the two I'd lean towards Shanghai, just because it seemed like there'd be more to discover.

Any reason why you're limiting yourself to the four choices? As an engineer there might be opportunities in Vietnam and Cambodia. If you're a civil engineer I know that Ho Chi Minh City is building a subway/el-train. There might be some opportunities on that project. Also alot of international development agencies are active in Cambodia. They're often looking for engineers on development projects. Here's a website with information about jobs in vietnam:

ejmlab - where did you read about HCMC having an elevated train built. There definitly isn't going to be a subway - the whole city is built on a delta and is subsiding anyway.

Oooppss, and about the OP as well....!
I would choose Shanghai. Most interesting. I only choose it because its the only place out of the 4 I haven't been, but I feel it would be the most interesting place to be. China = awsome country to live in, Shanghai = awesome city to be in (i've heard).
Too many ruby shirt wearing posh bastards in HongKong for my liking.
Been to Bangkok too many times to consider living there. A place to visit, not live. Plus the traffic.

A good friend of mine headed a GIS project for Ho Chi Minh city for over a year. During that time plans were being made for a city train system to be built in the next few years. The GIS he was working on needed to follow surveys that were being completed for the train system.

Sorry to go off topic OP but thanks ejm, thats pretty interesting. A regular conversation here in HCMC is what to do about the horrendous state of the roads....an elevated train was one we talked about the other day as being a good option. Clever us.

We already talked aboot this, but I suggest KL over Bangkok. The Thai PM Thaksin is turning out to be a bit of a Nazi. Badawi ran his last election campaign on an anti corruption platform, and handed the local Islamists their asses.

I would look for an expat-job in engineering in Shanghai or the surrounding area. I think the pay is between $60,000- $100,000 U.S. You can live nicely on that money. You never have to cook or wash your clothes again.
