|
|
Any cities of interest in what would be the southern cities of the US with all the cool southern accents?
That would include WV, VA, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, AR, MO, and TX.
My tentative list..
Asheville, NC - bohemian plus mountains.
Charlotte, NC - has a nice urban center and all the potential jobs around the banking industry!
Charleston, SC - architecture, trees, ocean, etc.
Savannah, GA - same thing plus moss trees (beaches, archicture, etc.)
Miami, FL - Because its MIAMI!
Biloxi, MS - the beaches looked cool.. very memorable when I drove through it.
New Orleans - always been a real cool city.
Houston, TX - the architecture looks pretty cool.. looks colorful as well.. and multicultural mix of a city. Plus Galveston is right there! Another prime city!
San Antonio, TX - Riverwalk, feels unique.
Austin, TX - live music capital and eye-opening politics
Corpus Christi, TX - never been there.. but ocean and beaches.. seems interesting enough to me! |

Nice list, but Texas isn't Southeast, really. It is the West! Especially Austin and San Antonio.
You have wisely omitted any city in Florida besides Miami.
Asheville is supposed to be worth a look, as well as Savannah. What about Atlanta? It is one of the important cities in the South East, and I've enjoyed it the few times I have been there- good food and music, among other things.
I think Biloxi and New Orleans might not be quite ready for a visit at the moment. Especially N.O. is best appreciated for its "life" and that is not back to normal yet, if it ever will be.
Houston? Why?
You don't have the Keys on your list- not a city, but definitely worth a look. Also there are some moss draped spooky old towns in North Florida worth a look. Of course, these are best appreciated on a road trip.
Also usually overlooked is the Bayou region of Southern Louisiana- now that is some beautiful country, with great food and gracious people.
Oh, and, T.B., if you get to Miami in January or February, I will be there, and I'll gladly shout you a beer and some arroz con pollo. |

You have to go to Ybor City in Tampa. One of the best spots in the US for nightlife. |

Yeah, Texas is more west.. but still have a 'southern accent'.. so thought I'd throw it in there as well!
Atlanta is definetely worth a look.. Georgia in general would be interesting - Athens, Macon, Savannah, etc.
Regarding Houston.. definetely that its incredibly low real estate prices.. looking at www.realtor.com there are some amazing prices for seemingly nice place.. and 4th largest city and one of the lowest real estate markets plus really multiculturally mixed (30% white, 30% latino, 30% african, and 10% others including asians).. just seems kind of unique.. and been viewing pics online.. a lot of the cool Lousiana streetlights and southern style housing as well as some real colorful housing.. might try to get some pictures later - I've been recently impressed being its so incredibly underrated.
Northern Florida.. I'd like to see St. Augustine.. maybe Ybor City (chiaa's suggestion) would be interesting as well - heard of that before as unique.
Bayao Lousiana is amazing for driving around.. I love that region of Louisana.. that entire state is real interesting. Heard a lot of New Orleans people permantantly left NO for cities like Houston, Baton Rouge, etc.. curious to see how the population changes for the next census.
This January/February I got Philippines tickets booked! Thanks for the invite for Miami though! |

Went to Atlanta a couple years ago and definitely enjoyed my time there. It's a different world from Edmonton, that's for sure! |

Yeah, I thought about that, but is the rest of Tampa/St. Pete worth a visit? |

Clearwater beach is nice (if you are into the beach thing).
The Pier in St Pete is good as well as the Dali Museum. I think the Dali Museum is great and I have no culture at all.
Bush Gardens and Adventure Island are fun.
Lots of sports events to attend.
Tampa Aquarium is suppose to be good now (first opened when I got to Korea and the fish took time to breed).
It is close to Orlando too. |

I forgot. The original Hooters is in Clearwater on Gulf to Bay drive.
Mons Venus strip club made famous by Motely Crew is near Tampa Stadium. |

The Atlantic beaches are better than the Gulf beaches.

Is this amongst the reasons for or against?

Arghhhh! A blight on the formerly beautiful central Florida landscape.

Why am I so not surprised?
Hmm, we have very different taste. But Ybor City is worth a look.
Sorry, Chiaa, but this is what marks the difference between those of us from above or below the Broward/Dade County line. Culturally, we are like two very different countries. |

It's funny how everyone else in Florida thinks those people from Miami/Dade are a bit weird. |

You should go to the Florida Keys if you are in Miami. You should go to Key West. |

Miami is a pit, don't go there unless you have a ton of money, and/or are gay, Cuban, Hatian or Columbian. I've never been in a more hostile place in my life.
Definitley go to the Keys but again bring money. Key West is nice but in the winter prices are unblievably high.
Like Chiaa I prefer the west coast, Ybor City is a nice place to party so is St Pete beach there was a bar on the beach there I loved. The beaches are much nicer than the Atlantic side, white sand beaches and much cleaner.
Also recommend the Everglades, fascinating wilderness thats slowly dying, see it before it dries up, take US 41 across instead of I-75/Alligator Alley, one of the most scenic drives in America |

Just curious.. is that true in general? Even up in Michigan.. the beaches in western Michigan are gorgeous.. but eastern Michigan they just don't quite match particularly sand-wise.
How about beaches around Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah? Good or not so good?
For some reason I just always assumed Atlantic side was better in Florida as so many beach towns/cities seem to be on that side..
I'm also a bit curious which cities are good for really just getting drunk.. seems like New Orleans would be that one.. kinda wonder how those Savannah/Charleston type places would be.. |

If travelling through NC, skip Charlotte. That is unless you're there to observe the beautiful city's urban sprawl. There's a couple of Denny's there as well...
Instead, hit up the triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). You'll find far more cultural interest in those cities as well as a nice young population due to several large universities (UNC-CH, NC State, Duke U.).
Asheville, definitely. I would also hit the coast, especially the outer banks. Kitty Hawk and the Lost Colony are there and they even run wild horses. Wilmington's a hotbed of bacchic revelry, so booze up and riot.
SC's not worth visiting. Period. They sell liqour in airplane bottles. Have fun with your $25 LIT. And your speeding tickets. And your potential beating if you've done both.
Tenn. is beautiful. I would recommend Memphis and Nashville.
If you're going as far as Texas, might as well clear the whole damn country -- it's worth it. |
