i think there was a thread some time ago about this.
anyway, i've always wanted to volunteer somewhere. i've been looking at peru (somewhere i've always wanted to go)....they seem to need a lot of volunteers at orphanages, teaching assistants, etc...

anyone ever done anything like this? any advice, warnings, stories?

i volunteered in Thailand to teach english to orphaned/impoverished children. Agape House in Bangkok is awesome for loving on kids.

There are also orphanages on Jeju and throughout Korea. Have you checked these out?

If you like working with developmentally-disabled people, check into the Camphill Communities. There are many of them in Europe, a few in America and one in Botswana. There's also L'Arche, sorta the same deal except with smaller establishments.

The Catholic Worker is in many locations, though primarily in the USA. Check their website. You don't have to be Catholic but it helps to be Christian. Then again there was a Catholic Worker in Des Moines that usta be predominantly Buddhist.....

There's WWOOF, if your into pesticide-free farm work.

There's www.ic.org - listing hundreds of intentional communities of all types around the world. Some of them have short-term volunteer positions. Or stay for years.....

Habitat for Humanity hammers nails into boards world-wide.

Try Service Civil International for work camps.

There are also work camps in North Korea, but that's a different story......
