I am writing a paper on the differences between Western and Korean behavior, and I am hoping that people might help me out by posting about the things that Korean people do everyday that Western people would find rude, offensive or just startling, but that Koreans don't even bat an eye at. As an example:
- old women that cough up a lung and spat it on the sidewalk
- people that just walk right up to the cashier and butt in regardless of how many people are waiting in line
- men that spit a huge gob into an ashtray so they can butt their cigarette out
This information is not intended to, nor will it be used to, ridicule or belittle Korean society in anyway. It will be used to warn newcomers to Korea about things that could possible offend them, so when they do see it, they won't be.
Thanks. |

| Not sure it would be considered rude, or just mildly strange but Koreans seem to fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. When they do this on the subway it usually means leaning on their neighbors shoulder. |

Koreans will often take several large boxes of shoes and dump them on an empty corner and stand next to them.
Koreans are much more independent. They are into small businesses.
Americans just whine 'bout not gettin' no job.
You have to watch your money here, very very closely. |

Hm...maybe you should define "Western" as being anglo-saxon culture or something else, because....

The urination and vomitation in public is a big one to me. Its cool to piss on a sidewalk or throw up all over the place, but blowing your nose is a big no-no.
LW- define your scale. Do you want this thread on business, health, sociology, what? |

Sorry, I don't buy your intention here. If you are writing some sort of paper, I would imagine that you would use more value neutral terms than "cough up a lung" or "spit a huge gob".
And you don't want to ridicule or belittle? Sorry, don't buy it. |

Korean dudes are really into falconry. I have nothing against this ancient and kingly sport, but they just let the birds crap everywhere and never clean up after them. As an American I'm offended.
I hate how the teenagers roam the streets at night in packs and spray shaving cream on old people foolish enough to be out alone after dark. That is so creepy.
The Buddhist monks yodeling all the time and urinating in the streets is off-putting and I feel it contributes to the negative impression foreigners get of Korea.
I know that full-body tattooing is perfectly acceptable in Korean culture but the tattoos, especially facial tattoos, are disconcerting to foreigners when we meet Koreans in business settings. |

It appears, at least to me, that he/she works for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Most people in Europe don't understand the concept of queuing. Only civilized nations like Japan, the UK and its former colonies seem to do this. The French certainly don't. They also let their dogs crap anywhere. |

| Did you ever notice that Koreans always seem to speak in a funny language? I think they aren't really saying anything, but they're just trying to make us feel dumb. |
