Just some random thoughts while waiting for the bell...

I have no trouble at all believing that some people would risk their lives for some nooky. No direct example comes to mind, but I do remember having to wait outside my advisor's door while the guy ahead of me had to re-make his life plan. He'd enrolled in this school because 'my two friends were coming here'. He didn't bother to read the college catalog. He found out from the advisor the school didn't offer a major in psychology. At the time, I was young and naive. I couldn't believe anyone could be that ignorant. Now I know lots of people are.

I also enjoyed the comment about the temporary marriage hotels. I read a bit about them a week or so ago. Prostitution is illegal in Iran. So a man marries a prostitute for a day, hustles down to the 'love motel' and then gets divorced. It's interesting to me how hypocritical it is for the religion to ban prostitutes but then allow itself to get twisted into this arrangement just so people can satisfy their sexual urges. Kind of like the first Borgia pope tossing coins down prostitutes' dresses in the Vatican. The one who ended up with the most coins in her cleavage got to spend the night. That's the story I heard anyway.

It's my theory that we humans are irrational all the time and just use our reasoning ability to come up with good-sounding reasons for doing whatever it is our passions made us want to do.

Tut tut, seems you have a bad habit of insulting poster's female relatives. Is it related to your mental illness?

The insult is hurled at him. Not his kin.
Perhaps you, too, missed Ya-ta's post:

Of course you can avoid ghettoes. You can accept immigrants and not snub them and insult them and discriminate against them. You can say something like, "Hey, guy! We need your labor. We need your creativity. We need YOU. How would you like to meet my daughter? She's pretty hot to trot."

I ask you. What kind of father would say such a thing?

Actually, I think it is rather funny, in a slightly disturbing way, that some muslims go to warzones to get laid, or blow themselves up to get 72 virgins. In fact, I find Islam rather ridiculous anyway, and certainly good for a few laughs. I was simply responding to the absurdity of the statement below.

The jihadis aren't so 'other' after all. They just want to get laid, like the rest of us.

Is that some sort of a joke? As a matter of fact Korea was in a much much worse situation than Egypt was 50 years ago.
I must be misreading your post-
Are you trying to say that the only different factor between the two is an Islamic one, and that this accounts for their present differences?
That's incredibly puerile, even by this forum's standards.

So, Korea was in a worse state than Egypt, but has now surpassed it by quite a way. Both received large amounts of aid from the United States. One is now an economic powerhouse, the other an economic backwater. Islam is not the only factor, but it certainly is a factor. Instead of rejecting outright what I have to say, why don't you explain to me why almost all Arab countries are in such dire straights, despite the largest transfer of wealth, via oil revenues, in the history of mankind?

To someone that seems intelligent, ambitious and possibly a good match? Just about any father in the world, especially here in Asia. didn't come from nowhere.

"Hot to trot" means she'll *beep* anything. My Korean isn't very good, but I'll bet your sunbogi there doesn't mean that.

I'd love to but I don't have 5 hours to spend typing it all out. Rejecting what you say outright is not only sensible, but practical in terms of time management for the both of us.

Just a brief summary of the reasons for the failure of muslim economies would do. If not, one would have to summise that you are unable.

1. socialist for a big chunk of time (syria, iraq, egypt, algeria to name a few)
2. corrupt (all)
3. high trade barriers (all)
4. Bloated bureuacracy (all)

Pretty much applies to all economies stuck in a rut.

And I would add that, when comparing Egypt and Korea, you would also have to note their Cold war allegencies and the effects on the economy as well as the business culture.
But the real reason I can't be arsed, bigverne, is that this is comparative politics 101 stuff- basic background info. Some other things I also can't be arsed trying to explain are: algebra to a 5 year old, advanced MS Excel features to a Kalahari Bushman.

seriously dude..

Nasser vs. Park Chung-Hee. Hmmm... Need we say any more?

And Nasser was about as religous as me, so can't pin his failures on his religion either.

The fact that you have clutched at this straw to demonstrate that 'we aren't all that different after all' shows not only how desperate you are to believe the liberal crap you spout, but how blind you are to the huge chasm in culture between Islam and the West that article demonstrates.

It really offends you that people everywhere are just people, trying to get through life as best they can, doesn't it?

LC: Intermarriage is a terrible thing, isn't it? Mongrelization and all that. Shameful. Awful. Wouldn't want that to happen, would we?
