K, so I got here in one peice. I know you were all terribly worried about me.
Anyway, my first night here, in Youngsan, at the hotel, I'm channel surfing looking for something I can understand, or maybe some porn, when I come across an entire channel devoted to Starcraft. That's pretty much all they do. I'm sure anyone whose channel surfed a bit has come across it. I like Starcraft as much as the next Terran, but the idea that there's a whole network devoted to it still strikes me as odd, even after a week of watching.
Now to my question. Does anyone else think these guys suck? Because I've watched them for several hours so far and I rip holes through their tactics like a .45 through tissue paper. These guys are supposed to be Korea's pro's?
Maybe I'm missing something. Do they have some kind of rules they have to follow that forces them to suck? I can't understand a damn thing they say, and usually can't even tell which kid is using what race, but it seems like they're going out of their way to play bad. I was joking about it with one of my Korean coworkers and he said it would be possible for me to join the starleague if I did something or other, but he lost me. I almost want to do it just to kick the crap out of them on national tv.
What do you guys think?

I think that as a newbie to Korea you should find better things to do with your time than watching Starcraft on TV.
And yes, I'm poking fun while while being deadly serious at the same time. |

What I've noticed about the Starcraft, Kart Rider, and Crazy Arcade shows is that it always seems to be two chubby 12-year old boys against two smoking hot chicks. And the kids always win. |

I've been going for walks, learning the neighbohood, shopping at local stores, found a nice bakery, might go to walmart today and pick up some things, etc. etc., but until I meet some more people besides the three other teachers I work with, my options are kind of limited. I know four Korean phrases and two letters of the alphabet so far. I put a thread in the job discussion forum to find expats in Pohang so as to get out more, maybe you can help with that one. So far all I've gotten on that one is how to say "no onions" in Korean.
I'm not really up on Korean etiquette just yet, can I go in to a Korean bar and start talking to someone? Pour him a soju with my right hand, holding my elbow? This book I read, Culture Shock: Korea says that you should not talk to someone unless you've been introduced.
Trust me, watching kids play starcraft is not my idea of a good time, but it's sort of what I got right now.

You can show up where they do recording of some tournaments (in Coex for example), but generally whitie doesn't do well because everyone back home plays "Big Game Hunters" and other unlimited resource maps which is a very different play style than the limited resouce maps used on TV.
If you strategy is to "stay in one place until I've build thirty zealots or twenty seige tanks then attack!", you will lose as the game will long be over by then. |
