Hi. I have this check that Bank of America sent me for referring a friend. Its in American dollars, of course. Anyways, I want to cash it before it turns to dust. Does anyone know where I can do this? Seoul area.

btw, I miss the QandA forum, but if its either travel or QandA then I guess Travel is better.

Assuming you have a bank account you can deposit it. They often tell you it will take 30 days to clear but my experience is that it's more like 10-14.

If you don't have a bank account you might be able to cash it, with the proper identification, at one of the larger banks like KEB. Failing that you could try the cheque cashing services (there are some in Itaewan I think).

If that doesn't work you can try asking your embassy for advice - we had a similar situation in France many, many years back (we'd tried cashing it at several banks without success), the embassy directed us to the bank they used for payroll. No more worries.

I had this same problem with a Canadian cheque once. I mailed it home to my parents with my signature on the back and a note saying that I am giving permission for my mom to cash the cheque and deposit it in my account there. It wasn't a problem.

Here's a list of American banks in Korea. Maybe they'll cash it for you?
