Chi-Chi is getting burnt at a school and is perhaps feeling like punching something at this time. It just happens that Chi-Chi is seeing the obvious- a monolithic culture- he's not the first person to feel that way- and would at the very least (if Chi-Chi is going to take crap at school) like to have some international flavor to enjoy while out-side of school. Is that asking too much?


I don't think Chi-Chi needs to get kicked by an ex-pat (Are you an expat? I noticed that you were giving Korean lessons earlier. At another thread I thought you might be a Korean key teacher when you mentioned something about who would suit Korea well and who woudn't. Anyway- I'm off topic- I just thought from all of your posts you must have something personally invested here in Korea since you seem to have an inside track on this that and the other thing that goes on.)

I'm not the nice police- just that- I hope you don't take pleasure in kicking people (teachers) when they're down. Perhaps you don't frequent the Job Related Discussion Forum and didn't see Chi-Chi's post.


Chi-Chi: I've talked to lots of teachers who have been all over the world and felt the same way. They wondered why a city of 11,000,000 or more souls would be so monolithic. Perhaps you'll stumble onto something that'll be more interesting in the weeks to follow.

People: there are other kinds of music aside from ballads. Look into it.

Although I like some Korean music, I think most of it is shiite. As I'm fond of saying, they took all the worst of western music and brought it to a new low.

When I have those days, I hit the bars and search out some western or other kinds of music.. there are some great music request bars in Shinchon.. as well as other parts of the city.. Macondos has some good Latin music.. I sometimes get overwhelmed as well.. because music is something I love to hear in a large variety kinds of ways..

For example, living in NYC, you'd just walk around a corner and some amazing street musician was belting out something you'd never hear before.. and just everywhere.. not just there.. but in places like Indonesia or Philippines and such..

All I got to say.. is don't go to China.. same thing.. only its Chinese music.. I was quite overwhelmed to be somewhere where a billion people have almost no creative ability to do something beyond the status quo there as well..

Anyhow.. yeah, music isn't that great in Korea.. the other thing I do is go to a PC-Bang and download some music I haven't heard in a long time.. or stuff I'm curious to find out about by seeing whats new out there..

Its bewildering in my opinion - find me more than two people under 30 back in hte real world who like ballads and i'll give you a nickel. Over here its the cool thing to like. When i was 15 if i caught a friend listening to something that sounded like michael bolton had mated with kenny g in a vat of valium, I'd shoot them.

Over here its the mainstream.

I blame the lack of drugs myself.

I'd have to disagree that Korean music is any worse than the crap we got back home. When it comes to tired and true audio beating it into the ground, you cant beat the guys in LA and New York.

Elton John once said that music is all personal and who gives a crap what someone else thinks. That's something that so wise that it more than redeems him for Crocodile Rock.
