Leave it to those crazy Japanese.

Bonno Girls

Bonno Girls is a pop group consisting of... 108 members.

The complete name of the group is 100+8 SEXY GIRLS FROM V.S.O.O.P -Bonno Girls. The name and band originated in a religious concept. According to Buddhism, there are 108 bonno, or "earthly desires". The 100+8 refers to the fact that 100 of them are "natural" girls (most of them models) and 8 are transvestites. Since this is an unprecedented initiative, Victor Entertainment is planning to request an entry in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest vocal performance group of the world. The two limited CD editions contain a set of 54 collectible cards each (that is, you should buy both in order to have all 108 girls' pictures).

Staff from the production company commented, "make-up alone costs hundreds of thousand yen,and it is very tough to arrange buses or anterooms. Interpersonal problems among members are rising, and all girls want to stand in the front, or get the main performance part. Doing anything is such a big hassle."

At the news conference on September 6, the producers said the band is scheduled to break up by December 31, 2005, even though the band was only formed in October. The dissolution will take place on New Years Eve, when the bells start tolling in Japan. (Buddhist temples across Japan toll their bells 108 times on New Year's Eve. This ceremony is called "Joya-no-kane" and it is believed that the 108 desires can be left behind in order to start a purified New Year).
