Thousands of pubs and clubs will be able to stay open for longer from today after new licensing laws took effect in England and Wales at midnight in the biggest shake-up for 80 years.

An estimated 70,000 licensed premises, less than half the total, have used the Licensing Act 2003 to extend their hours, and about 1,000, including 250 supermarkets, have applied to sell alcohol around the clock....

I especially like this line from Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner
Quote:
"I see anybody who wants a drink at four in the morning as a special interest group...

Whadya know? Every Englishman I've ever met is apparently a special interest group!

Drink up, boys.

happy days!!!
bigverne...yeah, i think it'll be mayhem at least for a few months (especially now christmas is coming) but it should calm down eventually...and let's face it, anything has to be better than the average English town centre at 11.30 on a Friday night (oh, the horror...)
It'll certainly be interesting to watch the results (from a safe distance!)

no it won't. a tiny proportion of licencees nationwide have applied for an extension of any sort, and even fewer have been granted.
in my medium sized city, there have been a grand total of ZERO applications. i know cause my legal contact told me.
the majority of applicants have been supermarkets, not bars and pubs as these venues can't make money on longer opening hours.
the hell predicted by the mail (you read the mail verney?) hasn't exactly commenced...
*looking out the window*
nope, no beer zombies on the streets searching for a pub... 'gimmmmeeeee beeeeer'

Actually, around 40% have, although few have applied to open for 24 hours.

I support the move, although the fact remains that English people cannot drink sensibly, and rather too many of them turn into raging w@nkers when drunk. Binge drinking is a serious problem, and many town centres, like Nottingham, are not very nice places to be on a Friday or Saturday night.

However, it will be good to have a nice drink in the pub until 12 or 1am. 11pm closing time is ridiculous.

I lived in England only briefly, but I also thought it was ridiculous that bars should close so early.

When I lived in Newfoundland, the government extended closing times, and I think that it actually helped the rowdy-drunk problem. Because closing times were later and were staggered, there was, uh, less staggering at the time time-- instead of everyone pouring on to the street at the same minute it happened over several hours.

it had to happen, they've been dipping their toe in by allowing 24 hour licenses at NYE and big football matches for a while.

If you think about how it used to be, the queue for the bar in a nightclub was never big just before 2am, most people have had enough by then.
My guess is the same as a lot of peoples- people will go mental at first as they drink right up until the new last orders just because they can, but eventually you'll see people going home because they want to, not because they were thrown out of a pub / couldn't afford to get into a club / weren't wearing shoes.

Not being able to get a few cans from Asda if you're heading off to a party after last orders is ridiculous so I hope all of the big supermarkets apply

I would benefit personally from the licencing law changes so naturally I'm in favour from a selfish perspective. However, I do fear for the effect it'll have on others and together with these liberal changes must be reactionary changes to policing England's streets. We should have a Zero Tolerance approach (cliche courtesy of The Daily Mail) to booze-induced violence in particular. Rowdy behaviour, okay. Mutilating someone's face with a pint glass or bottle - severe punishment. I've seen Accident and Emergency wards in English towns on Saturday nights and frankly there are just too many individuals who are a disease, a parasite on society. No doubt the changes will mean chavs will be "Ya get me doh?"ing their way to KFC at 3am as opposed to 12, but, as I say, the changes will benefit many decent people and the 11pm closing times were so ridiculous they were a national embarrassment!

That's pretty much the opposite of a zero tolerance approach though innit?

Time will tell what happens in the end, but is anyone really ready to stop drinking at 11pm? You're right, it was a national embarassment, and even if it all goes wrong, I can't see us ever going back to the old rule.

Cheers!

What is wrong with Notts? Seriously... the centre of Nottingham is a great place to get your teeth kicked out between the stagger from Lloyds to the Hippodrome or that place where anything goes in the washrooms.
