|
|
Folks, a temple I know, the beautiful Gapsa sort of between Gongju and Daejeon, is looking to find a foreigner (or more than one) who can every weekend (or trade off weekends) go to the temple to handle foreigners in the Temple Stay Program. What they need is not an English teacher, but rather someone who speaks enough Korean to stand between the monks and the guests, and hopefully someone interested in learning more about Korean Buddhism (or even a Buddhist). They can offer some renumeration, plus of course the Buddhist meals, the temple atmosphere, the interesting volunteer opportunity, etc.
If anyone of you feels this is an interesting opportunity and would like to know more, send me a PM or write back in this thread. Also if you know someone who is fairly conversant and interested in Buddhism who is not on this thread, please let them know, because for someone this might be a really great opportunity to be useful and experience temple life, too.
By the way, the rooms at Gapsa are really nice, with even indoor plumbing!
They insist that even someone who doesn't know about Buddhism is okay, as long as their Korean is pretty good. If you know more about Buddhism, less Korean is okay, but no matter what -some- Korean would be necessary. They need someone who can say "Allright, we all have to get up at this time tomorrow." "In the temple we need to only take as much food as we can finish." "At 10:00 we're going to meet back here for a tea ceremony" and other such basic instructions. They don't need you to teach -how to do a tea ceremony- though some translation between instructor and attendees would be nice, and the more the better.

i'm actually interested, but my schedule conflicts and i know almost nil re: korean language. but i encourage others to jump on this opportunity. good way to see a different aspect of the culture and may be a refreshing change from getting hammered at the club, beat up, and waking up in a pool of your own vomit.
from what apparently seems to be what happens to a lot of posters these days. eh, go figure. |

| Kapsa is a nice, but very small temple. I like it better than the big temple on the other side of the mountain...I can't think of the name. There is a restaurant there that serves a bottomless pot of dong-dong-joo. |
