I'll be in Thailand from the 28th of December until the 2nd of January(my third visit) and I'll be spending two days in Bangkok before heading to Koh Chang for three days. Basically can anyone who has been to Koh Chang tell me which part of the island they recommend and why? Also, will it be possible to just turn up in Bangkok/Koh Chang without a hotel reservation and find a place or should I reserve something in advance? It'll be the high season so I'm a little concerned about having to go around looking for a hotel and wasting precious holiday time.
Thanks!

If you don't have reservations now, you likely won't get a room for the holidays. Thailand books solid for Christmas and New Years especially the islands. Heck I'm going to Samui in Feb and already have reservations

My favourite part of Chang is White Sand Beach (can't remember the name of it in Thai) - when you get off of the ferry and onto the songthaew that takes you around the island, it's the first beach that it will stop at. The songthaew should actually stop at a hotel called "White Sands Beach Resort" and if you decide to not make reservations in advance, I would get off here and start walking the beach, popping in at all of the hotels along the way, both back in the direction you just came from, and then continuing on the same direction of the songthaew.

Can't say whether you should book in advance or not -- never been there over Christmas. BUT, I would suggest booking 2 or 3 places, in case when you get there you are unpleasantly surprised at the hotel.

I think it depends what you're looking for. Whereas most western-style hotels, especially expensive ones catering to package tourists and the like would be booked up, I imagine that most bungalows in Ko Chang would unlikely have a booking system and would probably go on a first-come first-serve basis.

The first time I came to Bangkok all the hotels within a reasonable price range on the internet were booked up, making me worried about finding accomodations, but when I got here I quickly discovered finding accomodations was not a problem.

Thanks guys. I'll try to make a reservation over the net but if I can't make one I'll just turn up and hope for the best. I should find something.

Still having problems securing accommodation so I'm considering Pattaya as another option for a few days...anyone ever been there?
