So you are connecting OK, but you are losing speed? Is it just slowly losing speed while your computer is in the same location? That would be weird, and all I could suggest from my playing around with my machine is that you change the broadcast channel on your router. If you never changed it, then it is defaulting at 6 (I think). The problem is that everyone else's machines default at 6, and if there are other wifis in the area, they can -and do- interfere, because most people just plug their machine in and if it works, they don't touch it. But wifi signals also bleed, so even though you are on channel 4, for example, signals on channel 6 will still mess you up. So chose the highest or lowest channel. Switch your broadcast channel to 1 and try that. If that isn't better, try 11 or 12 (if you have it). Your wifi card automatically finds the right channel, so the only ajustment you need to make is the broadcast channel on your router's website menu. That could explain why you have a strong signal, but your bandwidth sucks. It's fighting another router, a phone, or a microwave in the area- all of which throw out signals around the same 2.4 range.

If your signal is just not as good as you get further away, then that is normal. I can be in the same room, and if my big computer table is in between my laptop and the router, it can lower me from 54mps down to a slower speed. If you have walls between you, then you will likely have the same problem. It depends on antenna placement, etc. And don't forget that under the antenna is not the best spot to be, as most omni-directional antennas don't cast a downward signal as much. Try adjusting your antenna, if this is the case.

thanks for the reply, but it didn't work out very well...

so we switched the channel, and the network wouldn't show up at ALL on available connections even after refreshing and whatnot..switched it back to the original channel (default 6)

now, it's there again, but i can't connect...it was easy as pie to set up the first time:

found the connection, set it to WEP and entered the key

poof, it worked

this time, i enter the key and...nada...i get nothing

any suggestions?

Ok there should be a reset button on the back of the router (Pin size hole) Take a pen or a pin unplug the router from power then push and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. If that doesn't work try doing it with the power still on. It will reset your router completly to factory settings.
