If you're reinstalling Windows XP, just pop the CD in and restart. It'll ask you if you want to format later on in the installation process. If you're formatting a drive without an MBR that the OS does not reside on, open up windows explorer, right click on the drive and click on "format."

If you want "true" DOS, then you need a 98 boot disk. I have just the app for you.

Download from my server this .exe file, and run it. It will make a 98 boot disk so you can run fdisk and partition manually.

That looked a really useful tool. However, it demands a floppy disk, which is a shame as none of my computers have floppies anymore.

wow...talk about going crazy:

I was having trouble formatting the hard disk, so I did the following:

began using XP professional's format/delete partitions. Did that.
Then with a clean slate, I began installing my official licensed copy of Korean XP (until my English one comes in from back home). Man....talk about a headache...

I did, however, download a dos prompt onto a floppy. when i got to the dos prompt, i typed: c: it then gave me invalid parameters. It was as if C: wasn't there (by the way..this was BEFORE i deleted the partitions). That is why i went to deleting partitions and formatting this way.

Okay, here is a link to a Windows 98SE ISO file.

http://gentlegiant.no-ip.com/other/win_98se.iso

Give it about 15 minutes to finish uploading.

Burn this and boot to a DOS prompt.

Remember XP doesn't sit on top of DOS like most of the non-NT versions before it. It is its own operating system from the ground up. It's a bit like saying "How do I drop to CP/M from DOS?"
