Hi all,

I'd just like to know what happens when the school gives you [me] the 30 days notice to terminate the contract. I've still got about 4 months to go but the parents "insisted" I leave now. I think it's a blessing in disguise anyway. So the school has given me a grace period of 1 month. What happens now?

I know I have to get a release letter and I think Korea is not that bad so I might try another place.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Very Happy

Shake down your contacts, check the job boards here at Dave's and on the other websites.

I guarentee you will have another job in a matter of hours.

As long as you secure that golden Letter of Release, finding a new and better job is no problem.

Thanks for the help! Very Happy

Would it be a good idea to include the school in my CV or better to just leave it out?

Dont purely rely on Daves board for jobs. A lot of better offers out there. Shop around! Smile

Good luck.

You'll get another job fast, but are you sure that they will give you a release letter?

You are happy? They just screwed you out of your return airfare and severance. You only had 4 months to go. That means you did 8 months for far less money. They can't just fire you for no reason at this point. I would not be happy if I was you. Wait and see what they think is fair when they hand you your money....but then it will be too late to discuss it.

Thanks for the encouragement peoplez, Wink

I wasn't actually screwed by the school but by the parents. It had to do with some problem kids (nothing new here). It seems only korean teachers are allowed to discipline them. Since I was a foreigner and I tried the same method...it was seen as open warfare! Actually, the school told the parents they wanted me to stay, but we all know in some places, parents are the royalties here, so they insisted (strongly insisted I should say) I go a few times.

I'm ok with this as I don't want to spend the last 4 months miserable anyway...even if I do get all my salary plus the bonus.

By law they have to give you one month notice and if they fire you out of the blue...they have to pay you 2 months severence.

Ask a K friend to talk to immigration.

yes they must give a months notice...if you have worked there for over six months. under six months, they can fire you without notice.

and the bit about paying 2 months severance is not true at all. in any case.

to the OP... did the boss ever speak to you about your performance before giving you notice? has enrollment been slipping lately...or has it been low?
if your prformance has never been an issue until now at the 8month mark, then it sounds like a plot to get out of paying you the extras at the end of your contract. take it to the labor board.

I need to find a replacement teacher from mid-December to the end of February, furnished apartment, E2 visa sponosred if you need, (if you don't want the visa, you are welcome to work without it, it's your choice).

There is a possibility for renewal a tthe end of Feb as another teacher may not be renewing their contrac at that time, but it's not guaranteed.

Salary starts at 2.0 with housing. It's in Jeong-ja dong, Bundang.

If you're interested let me know.

Thanks for the advice/offer! Very Happy

My last day working at the school is at the end of the year Shocked (so I'm sorry I can't take that offer) and it should be celebrations time but looks like I'll be doing more searching than celebrating and fast!

I'm not sure what happens next.....do they just cancel your work visa and you must leave the country in 10 days or what happens?

This was basically a statement made by the parents that they are in control of the school. The principal/ vice principal informed me last week that they said no to them but that wasn't the answer they wanted so they returned to the school a 2nd time and will continue to do so until I leave.

...now back to job searching......
