Bet you never saw Johnny Cash & Dylan doing "One Too Many Mornings".

You're right, I never did until now, and thanks for it showing to me. Much as I've often grooved on the plaintive wail Rick Danko blessed us all with, I have to say I prefer the Cash/Dylan collaboration, and thanks a second time for the op to see it.

I was cursed (I think, blessed) with an 8th grade teacher who was wierd enough (and probably brave enough) to compel us to read lyrics from Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel as if they were poetry - of course, we know now that they are poetry, but people didn't know that in 1973 - as I recall, that guy got enough flak from various sources that he decided to teach kindergarten instead, and myself, I am here in Korea, teaching - well, another story, another time ...

I like the Cash collaboration because the structure of the song works very well as a conversation between people who have done the finest thing humans can do, which is exert a little work to understand the other person, and themselves ...

(Cash sings)
When ev'rything I'm a-sayin'
You can say it just as good.
You're right from your side, (Bob)
I'm right from mine.
(Bob chimes in, almost inaudibly : "I know it.")
We're both just one too many mornings ...

I'm entranced enough by the notion of the primacy of the lyrics that I do think Dylan requires a lyric sheet to read while the vinyl spins ... of course, modern CDs provide neither, so click the links IGTG gave and read along here.

One Too Many Mornings

Here's a stanza from another song, and we all know by now that Bob is the reincarnation of Nostradamus, so no surprise that it sounds like the latest headlines ...

Now the rovin' gambler he was very bored
He was tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
We'll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61.

Highway 61 Revisited

Dylan & Lennon: Taxicab Confessions
Synopsis
John Lennon and Bob Dylan talk smack about Johnny Cash and Mama Cass

Question: Is this footage from the D.A. Pennebaker film "Don't Look Back"?

Given the degree i love his music & songs, i agree with others who've commented that Dylan really
should NOT try to be so loose & cool on piano.

I love Dylan, and I love The Band, and about the only thing I love more than Dylan and The Band is "Dylan and The Band"! I also think The Band are amoung the finest interpreters of Dylans songs.

Eamo, I thought Time Out of Mind was excellent, did you not?

I saw Dylan in New Zealand on the Time Out of Mind tour. Id been a rabid fan for so long, it was really a high point. I went with my Dad, we smoked a big hooter quietly, then Dylan came out and launched into Tambourine Man, and I was thinking CAN THIS REALLY BE REAL!!!!?

By the way, in the video with Lennon, they both seemed very uncomfortable with each other, like they were jostling egos a bit. I actually prefered the way Lennon came out of it, a bit more reserved and wry. Dylan was pushing his coolness a bit hard, trying to be the man, in my opinion.

I liked it enough to buy it. After a few listens I got a bit tired of it. It's a bit samey. And the death and loss themes, while valid, (he had just had the serious illness prior to writing for Time Out of Mind) were just too morose for me at that time.

I remember there was a lot of hype about Time Out of Mind. His best album since Blood on the Tracks said many critics. Many diehard Dylan fans go for years yearning for the great man to return to the form which made him famous. We knew he had to much integrity to ape his old stuff and get an instant comeback so that was out of the question. Time Out of Mind seemed the closest thing to a genuine, top-drawer, Dylan product for so long that many fans imagined it was.

I don't think so.

Love and Theft, however, with it's jaunty (but solid) melodies and spry humor was a good enough return to form for me. I really enjoyed that album. Po' boy, Mississippi, and Floater are the stand out tracks.

Yeah. That dense, shimmery sound. I like most of Lanois' productions. But then, Love and Theft, my favorite, is produced by.... guess who? Lanois!!

I think there are three Dylan era's. Obviously the whole first ten years were incendiary. Then he dipped off, and came back with Infidels, which, in my view, featured his second best backing outfit after The Band. Sly and Robbie on drums and bass, Knopfler and Mick Taylor ( one time Stone ) on guitar, and Alan Clarke on keys. Dylan never sounded so tight! And now the current era he's in with the latest two albumns is probably his best after those first two periods. Hell, if he stopped recorded in 75 he would still have assured himself a place in rock history. Who else has brought such depth to rock poetry?

Standing on the waters casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing.
Distant ships sailing into the mist,
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing.
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

So swiftly the sun sets in the sky,
You rise up and say goodbye to no one.
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread,
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one.
Shedding off one more layer of skin,
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds,
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister.
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister.
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame,
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy,
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers.
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed,
Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features.
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space,
Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh. oh. oh. Jokerman.

Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame,
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain.
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks,
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain,
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin,
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray,
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet.
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat,
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot.
Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants,
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Play count the literary references with that!

Wow, great thread...agree with so much.

Especially agree with your comments Satori, Infidels was a good "comeback" and I really dig "I and I" , my all time fav. Dylan song. Leonard Cohen's favourite too and he told an interesting story of finally meeting Dylan backstage after one of Dylan's concerts in Paris. Dylan says he really liked the Cohen song, "the Law" and Cohen replied yeah, he had written it over a period of a year but it took him about 3 years to polish it. Cohen says he really digs Dylan's song, "I and I" and he asks how long it took him to write. Dylan says he wrote it in his head, in the shower. Drove to the studio, penciled it again and then recorded it in one take.

That's the difference between Dylan and Cohen. .....the divine and the mechanical.

I LOVE the Dylan/Band live album, Peace concert they performed together against the Vietnam War. early 70s. First half the Band on stage, then Dylan and then both together. That album rocks. Don't remember the title, it is at home, with all my other Dylan ......

My fav. cover of a Dylan song -- the O'Jays, "Emotionally yours.".....though Neil Young tries hard with "All across the Watchtower.".

Thanks for that shot of nostalgia, igtg. I saw Dylan and Morrison in almost exactly that spot in Athens in '89. Warm night. Cool memory.

No problem Ya-ta. Neat little bootleg eh? Have the audio on my comp at home.

Have you found any other similar footage?

Saw Dylan twice ( two nights consecutive ) in Eugene summer of 96'.

VM twice in Wales over the summer of 99'.

Even lucked-out & met the man himself for a little chit chat following the gigs.

The whole thing was really quite surreal Wink
