scurvy? Shocked

some interesting scurvy history courtesy of http://www.people.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/vitac.html ... assuming it is accurate:

James Lind's observation that citrus fruits contained something that counteracted the ravages of scurvy was followed by his development of a method for the concentration and preservation of citrus fruit juices for use at sea. In 1795, the British Royal Navy provided a daily ration of lime or lemon juice to all its men. English sailors to this day are called "limeys", for lime was the term used at the time for both lemons and limes.

It was not until 1932, that W.A. Waugh and C.G. King at the University of Pittsburgh, and Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, a Hungarian scientist, isolated and synthesized ascorbic acid, or vitamin C.

Curiously, only primates and guinea pigs are unable to manufacture vitamin C on their own, having lost the genetic information necessary for the production of this important cofactor.

Dr. Strangelove ~

Thanks to you, I ate ANOTHER 15 kilos of oranges to ward off scurvy and now, my mouth ulcer is enveloped my whole head. I'm a hideous freak! Oh, the horror! HORROR!

!

How awful! I guess I was lucky. I had a quick local anaesthetic, the surgeon extracted all four wisdom teeth, put in a few dissolving stitches, and sent me off to the recovery couch. I woke up in a few minutes, with my mum sitting there. She bundled me off home, I spent the day reading magazines in bed, and within a couple of days my mouth wasn't even tender.

What an awful experience you had! I had a bad experience once with my dentist, when I had to get a tooth drilled. It seems because I had had a lot of coffee before the appointment, I was metabolising the anaesthetic. (Caffeine inhibits local anaesthetic uptake). This meant that he'd inject some and ask if I was numb. I'd say yes, and the drilling would begin. After about a minute, he would hit the nerve! I would yelp in terror and agony and he'd inject more. The above would be repeated. After about 4 goes and I begged him to stop. It took 2 more years before I had the courage to have that cavity seen to, and by then, it was a mess. Now though, my teeth are all in very good shape. That's why I'm so over-the-top with cleaning them - I want to spend as little time as possible in the dentist's chair!

One big canker sore... nice. Well, I can only imagine what all that citric acid has done to the enamel on your teeth, and I don't even want to know what other effects the citric acid and fiber have had upon you Wink Having grown up eating lots of citrus in Florida, the citric acid doesn't adversely affect me.

Did you start or stop smoking recently? Either one will effect your gums...

My poor mouth. First this zany mouth ulcer, then the jiggly teeth; now, it appears a sliver of enamel has chipped off one of the bottom front teeth, and it feels very odd - an exposed sort of feeling. I have no idea what has precipitated this complete breakdown of dentition. Luckily, I still have those chipboard ones...

PS - Dentist Ho!

PPS - I've never smoked.
