The following are passages taken from Mark Twains The Innocents Abroad. This was published in 1869 and the some of his thoughts are still being repeated on ESL today.
Perceived avoidance of other foreigners
-------------------------------------------------
We wanted something thoroughly and uncompromisingly foreign – foreign from top to bottom – foreign from centre to circumference – foreign inside and outness – nothing to remind us of any other people or any other land under the sun.
Americans perceived advertisement of their patriotism
---------------------------------------------------------------
It is not pleasant to see an American thrusting his nationality forward obtrusively in a foreign land
Frustration regarding what I call putting the English brakes on
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, the rare happiness of comprehending every single word that is said, and knowing that every word one says in return will be understood as well.
The book start slow, but will make you itch to see Europe. |
