next week is finals, so often my coteachers take my classes so they can catch up. monday, i had 3 of 4 classes taken. tuesday, i had 1 of 3 classes taken. wednesday, i had 2 of 2 classes taken. today, 2 of 4 are taken and one cancelled. and tomorrow is the school's birthday, so no school. so this entire week, i have 4 classes. then next week is all half days with no classes, because of finals...
and the next two weeks are all movies and games since tests are over.
I love public schools... |

I'm in the same boat and I do like it. Yet, I actually miss teaching a lot of my classes, especially when I've got a lot of fun Christmas stuff planned that I could do. |

what are you doing for christmas? last year i taught "joy to the world" and the alternate version...
joy to the world
the school burnt down
and all the teachers died
we were looking for the principal
we found her in the toilet bowl
and somebody flushed her down
and somebody flushed her down
and somebody flushed her down.
then we made christmas cards
this year i am thinking "grandma got run over by a reindeer"
but i am not sure what else. i dont want to do the boring talk "we have christmas trees and eat turkey, and dad tells mom how bad the turkey is, and mom tries to stab him with the turkey carving knife, and little brother brought home his boyfriend and sister is pregnant..."
any ideas? |

Well, this week I'm doing the usual phonics and pronunciation with guides and word-building letters I have in the first 10 minutes while I still have everyone's attention. Then we're on to

Then a listening exercise (sorry, can't provide the pictures):
Who is Santa Clause?
1. The name Santa Clause comes from the Dutch Sinter Klaus, which comes from an old saint named Saint Nicholas. This is why Santa Claus is also sometimes called St. Nick. Santa Claus was not an important part of Christmas until the Coca-Cola Company in America started to use him in their advertisements. In 1931 they started to make advertisements of a fat, happy man with a big, white beard and a red suit drinking Coca-Cola. After this, the Santa Claus we know today became very popular and spread around the world.
- What other names does Santa Claus have?
- What company invented Santa Claus? Why? When?
- What does Santa Claus look like?
2. Today Christmas is the largest and most important holiday in North America and Europe. This wasnt always the case. In the 1900s businesses started to make Christmas into a bigger holiday to sell more presents. Christmas became an important time for buying luxury goods and toys for children. Children especially came to see Christmas as the best time of the year.
- Where is Christmas the most important holiday of the year?
- What age group looks forward to Christmas the most? Why?
- Who benefits from Christmas the most?
3. In the West, Christmas is a religious holiday for some people and a secular (non-religious) holiday for others. Some people go to church and celebrate Jesus birth, but most people use Christmas just to relax, get together with their families, give and get presents, and eat and drink. High school students usually get three weeks holidays, during which there are no extra classes at school. Schools and churches also like to put on special performances with singing and acting.
- What do most people in the West like to do on Christmas?
- What do students do during the Christmas season?
Then we're on to making Christmas cards. I try go over Christmas expressions and how to write a short letter before hand, but the last 15 minutes of the lesson usually moves quickly from an English class to an art class. Which is all right, since most of them have put in a good effort this term and deserve to get to do something fun. While we're making cards I also put on some carols from the site above and www.christmas-carols.net and encourage them to sing along to the songs they might know.
I like your alternate to Joy to the World, btw. Might have to give it a try. |

Speak for yourself. I haven't missed any classes thsi week. Tests start Monday, but I'll be spending the day hauling ass out to mokdong for the degree reconfirmaiton thing. Tuesday the insepctors are coming so I have to be at school until they go. Wednesday tests are in the morning and then classes in the afternoon. We still have to finish the cirrculum so there will be no goofing off for most classes. I'm not allowed to show any videos in class. |

I have had one class this week!! Was initially a little put out because like other posters here I have some cool Christmas stuff planned - but now one class is fine!
Actually, only have one more week of teaching before the hols' - brief study of the history of christmas decorations and then make some. |

That sounds like a fun idea. What kinds of decorations are you getting them to make and where did you get your info for the history of decorations? |

We're making paper snowflakes and traditional themed decorations.
Paper snowflake templates and info can be found at papersnowflakes.com
For traditional decorations we are making chains of eight traditional christmas symbols: star, candle, bell, bow, wreath, cane, fir tree, red ball. These symbols have Christian meaning that I got from pamplet someone gave me on the street! Sorry, since lost! My school is Christian and the Principle was very keen for the Christmas class to be religious. |

During the week before Christmas, my classes and I will be singing
hip pop Christmas carols. I used this CD, which can be obtained at
Emart and record dealers, last year and the middle school kids loved
it. This year I'm using the CD with high school kids who are eagerly
looking forward to the treat. Ho ho ho! |

SHHH!! Don't give away our secrets!!!!
Tuesday was test day, I went to school and did the grade 5 English listening test over the PA and then told I could leave. Next week we're doing oral testing and then the last week we're watching movies and playing games because we're finished all the material and I'm leaving the school.
sweet! |
