. Because the US plays all those weird sports it would be nice to put them in their place, their teams like to call themselves world champions but most of those weird sports are only played in a few other countries, you can't IMHO be a world champion if you play a few countries at the game. The world cup is as big as the olympics.

Hard to put the US in its place since absolutley no one in America gives a damn about soccer. |

Funny that! Nothing to do with them being the World Champions and the best in the world!
However, the fact that our taco eating friends are ranked fifth after chalking up victories against Belize and Nicaragua says a lot about FIFA's laughable ranking system. |

Yeah, MBC and KBS 1 will be showing it live from 4am, and then SBS Sports will get in on the act from 4:20am. |

| The FIFA rankings aren't really indicative of a team's ability. The US can't boast a single player who could be considered world class, and even their kid "Freddy Adu" hasn't been tested outside the weak American domestic league. So why are they ranked so high? Simply because they beat teams like Honduras consistently in competitive matchs (the world cup qualifying round, CONACAF Cup - or is it the mickey mouse cup? etc). If the US had to qualify from Europe they would fail to reach nearly every world cup. There are at least 8 European teams who are on par with the US who won't be going to the next world cup. I won't even start with bums like Saudi Arabia. There should only be two teams allowed from Asia. Korea? Wow! They can beat the Maldives (at least when they are at home) and some substandard outfits from the rest of the world in friendly games in packed stadiums at home. |

| I love it when people from Europe start moaning about how other teams from different qualifying regions wouldn't cut the mustard if they had to qualify through Europe. So what if there are other European teams better than, for example, the USA? Europe already has half the field of the 32 teams. It's called the World Cup for a reason. The European Championships let the Europeans battle it out amongst themselves. |

It is simply an unfair system. I agree that every continent should be represented, but not the extent that they are now. Does the champions league reserve a place for the Welsh champions in the group stages? The world cup should put the best 32 teams against each other. At the moment, it doesn't. A better way of operating the qualifying system would be to have the third placed to sixth placed Asian, African, CONACAF teams play the runners up in Europe in transcontinental two leg playoffs. The winners go the the world cup with the already qualified South American and European teams.

I haven't seen anyone suggesting that the other regions should be stripped of all their places at the world cup. Certainly, I am only suggesting a reduction in the current allowance followed by transcontinental playoffs (involving the European teams) to decide who else advances. For example, you could get two leg playoffs like this, Korea/Spain, Trinidad/Norway, Saudi Arabia/Turkey, etc. That way, the other continents still had a chance of getting 5 teams or so through. Under this system though, they would have to play meaningful opposition to get there. They wouldn't be able to wing it on away draws and home victories against bums like the Uzbeks. |

G-boy, that happens in many sports where one division or conference is considered weaker, hence easier to qualify for playoffs....
As for football, this is the World Cup not the Europe and the rest cup.
Thats the luck of the draw....look at Canada..we are in a tough region when it comes to qualifying...here us moaning?
Its just the way it is...gotta improve thats all. |

It doesn't happen in the champions league as I already pointed out.

I never suggested that other continents should be stripped of representation. My idea would give all the continents the opportunity to secure maximum representation (possibly even more than now), but teams from the weaker continents would really have to work for their places.

Are you joking?
Are you suggesting that you have a right to moan? Canada's national team is crap. It is unable to qualify against teams like Trinidad. |
