I was reading a post by Rteacher and felt inspired to ask this question.
He dropped out of the U of Mass because he'd lost faith in the State of Massachussetts.
I dropped out of the U of Northern Colorado because Janis Joplin died and therefore, art was dead.
Who else had a good bad reason for dropping out? |

I didn't finish my PhD dissertation (the big D) due to a protracted bad divorce (the other Big D).

I dropped out of high school in the UK because I disliked the whole snotty ptentiousness of the A-level people. Back in Zimbabwe, I dropped out again because I didn't like my school. Finally I finished it up at another school.
I loved my uni, so getting my degree was no problem. I was scheduled for an MA but gave up on it because I wanted to travel....
But now I'm aiming at doing a postgrad once again.. |

Yeah, I know your neighborhood. I want to go back to Tejas someday and do a graduate program at SWTSU, hang at the river in San Marcos and eat TexMex everyday...
cheers |

Read my mind! After the army, I graduated from SWT, now UTSM.
San Marcos River is my fountain of youth. I'm definitely a river rat. |

Re Janis Joplin's death: I suspect it was really the result of a conspiracy directly involving "Big Brother" - aided and abetted by members of the "Holding Company"... (They were probably pissed at being replaced by the "Full-Tilt Boogy Band"...) |

I blush, blush I tell you to admit this, but in Oct. of '70 I was convinced Tricky Dick was plotting a conspiracy to kill art. Jimi had died only a couple of weeks before.
The windowpane my brother had given me for a wedding present may not have contributed to rational thought, but the ex and I were convinced the prez was out to get music. So yeah, I understand igot's pattern of thinking. It's just that his is natural and mine was chemically induced.
But you may have a point. How would you like to be replaced by anyone with 'boogy' in their name.
PS: Big Brother was not that bad a band, at least not at the show I saw in Denver. |

Oh, so you've been to The Showdown? Yeah, I heard they changed their name to UTSM--why, I'm not sure. There's nothing like tubing down that clear water river with a floating ice chest in tow... |

My paranoid mindset was "set in stone" when I was "busted" the very first time I "scored" a "nickel bag" of "grass". Not only was I charged with possession, but - because a fellow classmate had panicked when grilled by the "pigs" and tabbed me as the "pusher" - I was an officially accused "drug dealer". I dreaded having to notify my parents - I began the call to them with "This will probably sever our relationship, but ..."
Behind bars, I grew increasingly angry as I reflected on government policies such as the napalming of countryside villages - I had just seen an on-campus (anti-war coalition sponsored) screening of film footage that highlighted (in vivid color) horribly disfigured Vietnamese women and children huddled together...
I was sure that "The Man" was targeting "pot users" (like I aspired to be) only because we actively "headed-up" opposition to the evil war machine responsible for atrocities. In an extended moment of rage, I rattled the bars of my cell - Just then, my parents appeared to bail me out... Seeing me for the first time with a full beard - and caged like a wild animal - my mother exclaimed in disbelief, "My son!?" and slowly feinted to the floor... (Reality was somehow taking a nightmarish turn.) That precipitated my very first "drop-out" (There would be a couple more to follow...) |

Does the school where you became ABD have a time limit to finish? And, if so, do you still have time? Your being in Korea can give you a great and unique topic that you can use to finish. I always hate to see someone ABD. When I was ABD, I said that means All But Done
And considering the tons of work etc. that it takes to get to that stage, if it is not too late, I encourage you to finish.
Best wishes,
<*))))><

PS: I dropped out of two MA programs and then finally started and finished one.
I also dropped out of one PhD program, and then later started and finished one.
Sometimes you just are not sure if it is the right major, or program or school. But, when you know it is the right major, the right program and the right school, then (with years of hard work, and a little mental illness can't hurt ) you can do it.
