Has anybody had a virus that has messed up your computer before even using it? I just bought a computer from Hi-mart and got it delivered and setup today. I had ntopia from KT already ready, but ever since it was plugged in, the internet is slower then grass growing. So I got KT to come out and look at it and they said that a virus is on the computer slowing down the internet speed. I find that hard to believe when I've never used the computer before to allow a virus to get on it. Plus I've ran virus/spyware scans many times and have yet to find anything. The only thing I can think of is if there was a virus on the KT servers. If you've experience this before, let me know how you handled it. Thanks.

Well, it was preloaded with Korean WinXP Home, but I have a English WinXP Pro that I installed right after. Both have the same problem.

I've also noticed that in Network Connections, you can not double click the Local Area Connection icon to view the status of the connection. It just sticks.

It's weird because I get good download speeds for individual files and p2p, but browsing websites with IE is slow as molasses. I've did fresh installs of KO WinXP and EN WinXP... ran many different virus/malware checks... reinstalled the network card... renewed ip's... I'm running out of ideas.

Confused

www.getfirefox.com

i just never liked IE, and firefox hasn't failed me yet, so... you might as well try a different browser. I doubt it's actually the problem, but you never know.

Get a router, Someone may be giving you a DOS attack on some ports. A router will block the attack and also be able to give you a report on ports trying to be exploited.

Are you installing your OS with SP2?

Well it was like this from the very begining. The delivery guy set it up, plugged it in for the first time and he experienced the same thing. So the only way is I got a DOS attack right when he plugged in the ethernet line for the first time. I have never had smooth browsing.

SP2... yes.

well... its a wierd one. Are you on a 'lite' connection?

I would say you may have some spyware/malware somehow. I know you said you did a scan already, but usually thats what makes your browser slow down.

Check whats been installed under 'Add/Remove' programs in the control panel.

No, I have KT Ntopia-E. I'm suppose to avg. 63mb/sec. I'd take one tenth of that right now. I've done extensive virus/spyware/malware checks with many programs. It's crazy because I can get a whole season of ATHF on Bitcomet, but I can't check my hotmail account. I think God is punishing me for all the times I drank milk without a glass. Ahhh!!!

Well, I will be honest and say I dont know what to tell you.

If you can, try and get another computer on that internet connection and see if it behaves the same way, that way you can eliminate the internet line or the computer at least.

Are you running bitcomet while surfing the internet? I know that my web browser gets really slow when I'm downloading torrents, but if I close bitcomet it's up back to normal. I have no idea why.

Seeing as it's a new com, you might want to bring it back and ask them to give you a new one that works.

This place has helped me out a couple of times when I could find no answers elsewhere:

http://www.cybertechhelp.com/

They're pretty slow too, but have always fixed any problem I went to them with.
