Indeed, whether or not you like RnB is a personal preference. As to the reason for her fame, you answered it kinda yourself. I also dont think she's that hot looking. But she has a massive powerful voice, great RnB vocal styling, great stage presense, can dance well, and is a real genuine performer. BoA is not. She's the best the Koreans have right not, but not even a tiny bit close to the top american stars. |

Because a) Unlike Boa she has an amzing voice (though not my cup of tea) b) Her ex husband was some Sony bigwig which couldn't have hurt. |
Westlife have done duets with both. Listen to them if you want to find out which one is a singer and which isn't.
If BoA could motivate people to learn English the way she motivates delusional middle school girls who think they can be the next one to enter dance competitions it would be a nice start.
The BoA is an amazing speaker of foreign languages myth has been well received. This is from one of my high school students:
"For instance, in Boa��s case, it is known that she had systematic education prior to middle school. She studied very hard - not only dancing and singing, but also Japanese and English. So she not only developed talents as a singer, but can converse with a foreigner without a hitch." (yes, I edited the grammar). |

I think BoA has to be one of the worst dancers out there. She tries to hard... too much flailing about.
I often liken her to a fish out of water ... just kinds flopping about in hyesteria. My students love it when I say that cuz most of them come to realize it's true.
Mariah Carey is popular cuz her voice is amazing, she is a complete whack job (people love to laugh at her), and she's persevered for about 15 years noew. |

Have to agree about Mariah Carey not being very hot.
I mean I have met numerous of these tall (5'9") mixed-ethnicity girls with long curly hair, big brown eyes, big smile, slightly husky speaking voice, long legs and curves and one does tend to find them a bit lacking in the 'physical attraction' department. |

Well, the look-alike is prettier, although she also looks 13.
I laugh everytime I hear fans claim some Korean teeny-bopper is fluent in English. Right. If that's the case, then explain to me why Boa sings in Konglish like the rest of them. Even if she doesn't write her own lyrics, I'm sure there's a way to get the song writers to use English that is a little bit less cryptic. Besides, Korean pop singers who use code-switching between Korean and "English" (to appear more international and to sing overtly sexual lyrics that they don't have the courage to deliver in Korean) are rather tiresome and childish.

Mariah Carey is rather attractive, although she always looks like she's having a bad hair day. |

Getting there(making it) is really hard. If you want to know the extent of worldwide competition all you have to do is choose a genre iin a music shop and count the number of saleable artists with product in that store than factor in every school kid in every town in every (almost) every country competing for recognition in that genre.
I watch bands/groups and I think more power to them.
If you know someone then that is a huge start(99%). The manager of ZZTop once said "talent aint worth squat" , meaning endless touring (at way way way below minimum wage)and publicity(hits wouldn't hurt either).
BOA has hit a great emerging economy at the right time throughout Asia with kids with lots of disposable income. Actually, comparing populations to NZ, Aust the reach is greater. Comparing UK, USA, Canada marketing in Asia could probably get one there faster(stardom) than the conventional climb the ladder country hopping rite of passage. |

Mariah Carey sucks.
I wonder how many people posting have heard BoA sing. IMO she has an awesome voice. On those rare times you can catch her singing something that isn't Korean pop trash you can realize she has talent. Also she is only 19...if she keeps singing and learning, she WILL get better.
Mariah Carey is how old now? I didn't like her in the 80s and I don't like her now.
I am surprised no one mentioned Jennifer Lopez...if a fly girl can make it big in America with low talent....people really shouldn't be bad talking BoA. |

If BoA really can speak Engish well, I find it odd that she can't get beyond "Nice to meet you" and "me too" without the help of a translator.

World star Britney Spears and rising Asian star BoA met for the first time yesterday, creating much excitement for the fans.
This meeting of BoA and Britney Spears was an event that was of great interest to the korean fans. The two stars met on the recording of SBS TV Christmas Special - 'BoA and Britney Christmas Live' yesterday (December 9) at 8:50 pm in SBS Dong Chon Open Hall. Although they only talked for 5 minutes, the two praised each other and wished each other well.................
Spears greeted BoA with a hug and afterwards said "You are really pretty. I listened to your CD a few days ago and I really liked the songs." praising Boa and Boa in return gave her a pair of traditional Korean arm warmers.
The 200 fans that attended the recording listened carefully to their conversation and everytime they each said a word the two stars were greeted with great applause.
Perhaps meeting a world popstar was too much for BoA but after greeting her with "Nice to meet you" in english, a translator was used for the rest of the conversation.
When asked "what you would like to recieve as a present for Christmas" Britney replied, "Clothes and accessories" from which BoA replied, "me too", ending their conversation.
After about 5 minutes of conversation, BoA and Britney began their separate performances. Wearing lingerie-like clothes, Britney showed off her sexy image starting with her new single "Me Against the Music" and four other songs. BoA sang Valenti and various other of her own hit songs. After the concert, BoA said "I had only seen Britney on TV so it was very interesting to see her in real life."
However Britney who had been requesting many fussy conditions during her stay in Korea, left as soon as the concert finished leaving no further chance for the two stars to talk and the fans disappointed.
The recording of this event's performances will be broadcasted on SBS on Christmas day. |

| I saw the TV show where they both performed. I hate pop music, but I have to say that Boa's performance was very amateurish when compared to Britney's. |

did you see that 11 year old girl debut with her at the KMTV music awards? stay tuned for her.. remember once boa becames 25-28 she will be considered old for the elementary and middle school fans! so they need a year teen star! its all about ENVY! will BOA still be a huge star at 28-30? willl she pack concert areas? will people be lining up to hear her sing? I bet she will be coming to the end of her days!
unless the korean music scene has a huge impact on the lifestyle here and she becames the madonna of korea..
but as of now.. she is a teenager singing.. I guess you can say she is the brittany spears of korea.. IM NOT A GIRL not yet a woman!!
but where shes goes next will be a decision with her marketing people!
if they try and go the way of SEXY! CHEAP which seems to the be the norm now in korea.. they will lose!!
if they try and stay clean , cool, and record meaningful songs! she will last!

whitany a better singing than mariah though in my opinion but they are alittle different so hard to compare..
anyway..
BOA if she wants to survive and be respected as a SINGER!!! not an entertainer! then she needs to spend a few years in this teenage star model lolliepop circle. and then slowly break away from it and start to record some ballards and work with some great artists in korea and get some respect with the real music fans!! not 12 year old girls!!
same as hollywood your fame is based on your looks !!
the days of talent are out the window!!

You'll excuse me if I feel that the fact that you think Mariah Carey "sucks" doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence in your ability to judge the merits of other female singers. Carey had world wide number one hits in every decade of the nineties. She's actually one of the most popular performers ever. You think that happens all on looks and hype? Hell, her singles sell well in countries that don't even have her videos on tv. Gosh, golly, gee, perhaps just maybe it's got something to do with her singing? Ya think??? Even if she quit tomorrow, Careys place in music history is secured, she is a legend, and major player. You think BoA is heading for that level of impact? Even if we just consider Korea? No way, 6 months after she stops putting out music it will be like "BoA who?"
And don't get me wrong, I like BoA, but don't be confusing a "good singer" with a "real diva". |
