Un-freakin'-believable!

Quote:
Hwangs research team member Dr. Roh Sung Il told Korean broadcaster MBC, No embryonic stem cells exist in the research that was later published in the journal Science in June, 2005.

Roh told an MBC reporter that Kim Sun Jong, one of the team researchers dispatched to the University of Pittsburgh to work with U.S. scientist and paper co-author Prof. Gerald Schatten, said in a telephone conversation recently, Dr. Hwang and Dr. Gang Sung Keun ordered me to fake the stem cell data.

Full article here.

How in hell did he think he was going to get away with this?

How fast can he go from "hero" to "zero"? It's all over the (Korean) news right now.

I've given up trying to make sense out of this whole saga. Tomorrow it could turn out that this guy is lying, and then the day after that we might learn that he is actually Dr. Hwang's ex-wife whom everybody thought had committed suicide but actually fled to Thailand and had a sex change operation so he/she could come back and ruin his reputation forever.

If this turns out to be true, I'd say the guys at PD Notebook are owed a pretty goddam huge apology.

And not that I enjoy revelling in the tribulations of Dr Hwang, who seems like a nice enough guy overall, but the orientalist claptrap of this adulatory SLATE article from a few months back takes on a rather comic tone in light of recent events:

Although that sounds much more interesting, I think the real story is coming out now, and it won't be good for Prof. Hwang. I just went over to Google News, and this is now a "front page" story...

I used that article from Slate as a discussion topic in one of my classes.

I guess there will be a plethora of related articles and discussion topics becoming available in the following days, albeit with a slightly different slant.

I'd be curious to know how the students responded. I thought about using it myself, just because its always interesting to have an outsiders view of Korea(even one as wacky as that article). Never got around to printing it, though.

Well, I'm not convinced yet. The fact the stem cells have died through contamination does not disprove they weren't successfully cloned. I'm waiting for evidence.

"Presidential spokesman Kim Man-soo quoted President Roh Moo-hyun, who is visiting the Philippines, as saying after being briefed on the news, ``Lets wait and see."

Smartest thing to ever come out of his mouth.

I just love the fact that the Slate guy thinks Koreans eat RICE with their chopsticks.

Just a tiny inaccuracy (all of us here know that Koreans are the only East Asians to eat rice with a spoon), but it's somehow that much more funny when the entire article has now been discredited.

In light of the new allegations, I find it quite ironic that "PDs Notebook" has been canceled by the big wigs at MBC.

I used it in my advanced class. I don't regret it because a few of the students in that class who were taking tests for admission into a foreign language school encountered that article during the listening section of the test. I made the right choice. Cool

Well, this article says Dr. Hwang essentially admitted his article in the journal Science was innacurate.

http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1409361

Doesn't look good.

Oh, and that Slate article was hilarious. I can't believe they published it.

Security personnel stand guard in front of a room where stem cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk is staying at the psychiatric ward of Seoul National University Hospital in downtown Seoul, Thursday night. (From the Korea Times - emphasis mine).

The Slate article made for an interesting class. Although it was overwhelmingly positive towards Korea, it did bring up some points regarding the stature of the sciences, and those who study the sciences, in Korea vs. the US. That led to a (pretty frank, in my opinion) discussion about the differences in the educational systems of the two countries.

The article lended itself easily to debate/discussion.
