|

hello, everybody!
my wife and I both have laptops here, and we recently got a router so we could both connect to the internet at the same time, and so we could transfer files. Now, the internet has worked really well, but networking the two has been a nightmare. Our HP laptop (A) can see her Averatec laptop (B), and i can access files on B from A, and B can see A under My Network Places, but can't get files from A. It says B doesn't have permission to access A. I don't know why this is, and I can't seem to find any help from the internet anywhere, so I'm wondering if any of the tech-heads around here can help! thanks in advance for anything you can help with.
Specs:
Both computers are XP home, Router is a Zio (some korean crap brand), computers have seperate IPs, and they can ping each other no problem. |

Don't worry, you are not alone. This is a source of great angst and swearing for many a windows users. Myself included. There are several threads about it, which you can find on Google.
What solved it for me was unsharing all of the files, then re-sharing them again. I think I had to reboot after that, too. Try unsharing every file, then re-sharing again. If that doesn't work, then unshare everything, create a new wireless network under a new name, then share the folders again.
You can't change the name of your network without screwing all of this up. If you change networks, you have to go through this process again.
This is a huge XP problem suffered by many. |

Its not a problem if you know how to share properly.
I think the easiest way is to create user accounts on both computers that have passwords. So whatever the current login name is, just assign a password to it.
Next, All you need to do is create shares and assign privlidges to the share. Thats all.
To share just right click on the folder for example, then click "Sharing and Security". Then click "Share this folder" then click
"Permissions". Thats what it all about, permissions. |

alright, so things still aren't going well...
BBE:
I tried unsharing everything, re-running the network setup wizard, and even renamed both computers and the network. Then shared everything and still the same problem: A can see B, B can see A, A can mess with B's shared folders, but B can't access A's. It still says B doesn't have permission.
Giant:
Both user accounts are the same, both have the same password, user account is enabled on both. Permissions seems to be my problem, yes. However, when I click share this folder, there is no "permissions" button or dialog box or whatever. Where did that come from? How do I get that? After I click "share this folder", it does nothing, till I click apply or ok, then it brings up a box that says, "setting permissions". Is there a way to do this manually?
thanks again. |

as I said before, I can't follow those steps, as there is no permissions button or anything. I believe you have what's known as XP Professional, am I right? Apparently, from what I've read, XP Home has that disabled so that you can't screw it up, cause anybody using a network at home is some kind of moron. Your screen would look the same as mine if you had 'simple file sharing' turned on. So in summary, that button isn't available in this version of Windows. Any idea how to make it available? |

Okay, I am not sure what to tell you then, since I never use Home edition.
If you look at this link, download the XP Pro ISO, burn that and then try again to install.

Yes, just lose Home and install Pro, it will save a lot of pain for later. |

what should i do about the inevitable authorization that will be necessary? I will need a product key, won't i? I would assume that the one on the bottom of the laptop is for Home only... |

This is an XP Home issue. It doesn't use permissions the same way as Pro does. If you want advanced networking options, upgrade to Pro or just give up.
I know this because I was considering getting XP Media Centre Edition which is essentially XP Home + MCE addons for a little more functionality. I decided against it since the networking options are the same as with Home. Now, if XP MCE was XP Pro + MCE addons, it would make a rockin OS.
From the MS site:
Quote: |
PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for home use. Windows XP Professional features, specifically Domain Join and Cached Credentials (Credentials Manager for logons) are not included. As a result, you will be prompted for your logon user name and password to access network resources after you reboot or log back on to the PC. In addition, file shares or network resources that are set to require a domain-joined PC for access will not be available. Remote Desktop and Encrypting File System support are still included. |

That's the kind of hopeless stuff I expected!! Thanks for not disappointing me!
Also, I don't think connecting 2 computers with a router is advanced. There's gotta be a way. Of course I'll probably end up upgrading anyway
hey giant, thanks for the link! |

The networking isn't really the problem with a router. The issue is whether or not you will be able to access network shares with equal ease on each of the machines wihtout having to do MAJOR tinkering to get it working. |
