I was changing my desktop background on my laptop to one of my own photos. It looked really bad so I right-clicked on the background, and played around trying to fit it properly to the screen. It was on something called 'notebook' and I changed to 'monitor.' The screen went black! I turned it off and it booted fine after the Windows XP loading window because I could hear it. I kept shutting it off, not the correct way as I obviously can't view the desktop or the start menu.

Now it won't accept my password or boot up at all!! I don't know what has happened to it. I'm scared I have messed it right up. I'm thinking of taking it in for repair but does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Is it because it was shutdown improperly so many times? Do you think it is fixable?

Thanks.

Probably you switched the output mode to monitor, so rather than displaying on your notebook screen it's sending the video information to the external monitor port.
Plugging in a monitor should let you see the screen again, and allow you to change it back to notebook again.
Just an idea...
