Back home Father (some big bank VP) told me the economy is on the cusp of being in the doldrums, with beef exporters hemorrhaging money daily on a massive scale.
Currently, all beef from Canada is banned from import into the US... and all US beef is banned from being imported into South Korea/ Japan. The science is out saying that Canadian beef is safe, but it looks like a politicial impasse is being used to destroy the industry in Canada.
After Canada won out against South Korea in the Olympic bid, Chretien talked to the Korean Official in attendance hoping that this moment would be correct to ask for a lift on the beef ban. Good luck, buddy

I'll take Canadian or American beef anyday over Korean beef...add Argentine, Colombian and Brazilian to the list....Korean beef just doesn't measure up to good, ole NA and SA beef..
I'm tired of hearing Koreans brag that Korean beef is the best in the world and that the whole world demands Korean beef over all others...ain't never had good Kansas City or Albertan beef...or eaten a nice juicey Argentine steak.... |

Korea and Japan want to keep out Canadian beef. The Canadian and American "beef distribution system" (I don't know the proper name) doesn't track what goes where, thus if Canadian beef is allowed back into the U.S., U.S. beef will be added to blacklist and will not be allowed in Korea and Japan.
On top of this, Japan is still recovering from their own Mad Cow issue a couple years back, and the ban on Canadian beef is helping their industry recover.
Now it turns out that there is a chance that the cow was originally an American cow. OH DRAMA! |

Is there such a thing as Korean beef? The amount of beef consumed in Korea doesn't make that possible. Probably 95% of the beef in Korea is imported. One of my neighbors back home exports beef cattle to Korea once a year. |

Gord, excellent summary (I think anyways)
Phil, alot of those Japanese steaks are still US/Canadian beef. We export alot of the good beef (high fat content) because the Japanese will pay top dollar.
I agree though, many good steakhouses in Japan ! |

One of good friends back in San Francisco is a Chinese-Malaysian guy.. he said that beef is REALLY different from Malaysia & China compared to North America..
I can't remember exactly what it was.. but he said he doesn't find the meat very fresh.. or overly processed.. or something.. or they put too much chemicals or something.. I don't know exactly.. but he use to bring it up in conversation from time to time.. and he said it had a really funny taste in North America.. and I know he didn't like it. |

What? Someone got a beef with beef!?
Okay.
Cattle in korea are fed whatever the farmer wants to give them. They are not 100% grain fed. A mixture of "table scraps," I've also seen dog food given to cattle at many farms, some share the same food as pigs. I've seen with my OWN eyes a few farmers who were raising around 1000 head of cattle feed their herd scraps from various restaurants. These garbage trucks go from restaurant to restaurant in many cities and collect all the waste food. You'll see them if you are looking. These blue or white trucks have 50 gallon drums sitting in the bed of the truck and they dump the leftovers from restaurants into the drums. Once they are full, they sell them to the farmer and again, I've seen the farmers empty the drums into the feed bins for cattle. In Jeju, black pigs are raised on dog and cattle dung. No joke. As previous posters wrote, korean beef is not tasty. Stringy, etc. You check out e-mart and watch how many koreans are buying korean beef; very few. It's usually the import beef that sells. |
