Just finished watching it on TV here in Korea, and at the end I felt really confused. I guess I had seen the director's cut when I first watched it (in Japan downloaded) where he goes back to his mother's womb. I watched this (which I just learned is the theatrical cut) and he goes back and tells the girl to screw off and they never become friends but they see each other just before the end. Now I had no idea there was two versions.
I actually thought I had made up the other one in my mind somehow for a few seconds until I guessed there must be two endings. It was a strange experience for a few seconds, I can't really describe it (maybe all work and no play make me ...). Anyone else been totally floored by something like this (nothing major, just so out of the blue)?

BTW, liked both versions, but the director's cut was a bit better.

I only knew there were two endings because I watched it with someone who had seen it before. It's strange that the two ending are so very different. You leave the movie with a completely different impression from each of them.

I think butterfly effect was excellent. Now I want to see the directors cut.

*** SPOILER ***

He went back to when he was in the womb by watching a video of his mom giving birth. He then wrapped his hands around the umbilical cord and killed himself. This way no one ever met him and he couldn't screw up their lives. They all have good lives after.
Also, earlier in an extra scene, you learn that the mother had had two stillborn deaths previous to him. This is basically saying that his two brothers before him did the same thing.
The two endings leave incredibly different impacts.

Wow - that's pretty cool.
I guess the one I saw was a bit more of a happy ending but the directors cut is interesting.

I thought the first ending (where he goes back to the womb) made more sense in the overall scheme of things but I think they went with the second ending for the theatrical releases. I thought it was a great movies tho.

If anyone is interested in movies with alternate endings, check out The Abyss with Ed Harris. The director's cut ending in that movie is so much better than the cinema version. But they went with the "milder" version for political reasons. Also check out Joy Ride and I think the movie Identity with John Cusak has couple of endings too.

Enjoy!

That spooks me out! I saw the version where he tells the girl off.

Remember "Love Actually"? There are like five or six story lines, and one of them is about two porn actors who fall in love. That one was completely cut from the version of the movie I saw in Hong Kong. When I saw it again in the US and those scenes were included, I thought I was hallucinating... it was a silly, absurd story line in the first place, and having seen the movie without it before only compounded my disbelief.

I rented the DVD from Blockbuster back in the US when it first came out about a year and a half ago. That was the self-abortion version.

I didn't know that movie "Love Actually" had another version. Hmmmm, interesting. I'll go check it out at the video store.

Not an alternate ending... just one extra story line.

I'd like to know what they were as the ending I've seen is not exactly upbeat.

Too much thought into this movie. I finished watching Donnie Darko recently and was floored. Not different endings but just the abstractness of it all. You're left dazed and confused. I don't want to think too hard when I'm watching a movie and I sure as hell don't wan't to come out saying,"What the hell did I just watch?"
Just my 2 cents.
