Suicide Attacks Kill About 100 in Iraq
AP - 56 minutes ago
KARBALA, Iraq - Suicide bombers targeted Shiite pilgrims in the south and police recruits in central Iraq Thursday, killing about 100 people in the deadliest string of attacks in the country since September. The U.S. military said a roadside bomb killed five American soldiers patrolling in the Baghdad area. Earlier, Iraqi police Capt. Rahim Slaho said the U.S. convoy was heading for the Shiite holy city of Karbala when it was attacked 15 miles south of the city, and five soldiers were killed. |

Before most would have been shocked, but now I think most of us have become desensitized.
Just take comfort in Bush and the boys as they will assure all that things are getting better.
When the U.S. pulls out during the thick and dirty part of the civil war, we will hear from those same boys that "victory is ours 'cuz we got rid of Saddam".
When western powers decide to circumvent and breach international law, it makes their position weaker. A little more time and a great more wisdom would have gone a long way. But since they couldn't get Bid laden, they went after Saddam.
I think there might also be a lot more killings going on that are never reported.
Take a look at history, and Iraq has never had any times of peace.
I would be interested in hearing what others are predicting for the future of Iraq. Just some nice comments.

Iraq doesn't really have any history to speak of. It is a colonial invention, and is not a real country. It should be partitioned into separate Kurdish, Shia and Sunni areas. It is obvious they cannot live together in peace. |

The major mistake with the Iraq war was the idealistic notion that Western democracy could be supplanted into a muslim country. A look at the Koran, Islamic history or the governments of almost every Islamic nation should have told them otherwise. It is clear that very few people in the American government have the first clue about Islam, athough maybe now, they have wised up. |

I don't think they've wised up so to speak.
Civil war could be the best thing and let them carve it up. Self-determined destiny is the best way to go, as the U.S. is living proof of that. However, the U.S. wants "friendlies" in the area and I doubt that all divisions will have governments and leaders who are friendly toward the U.S.
Anyway, today was a bad day, but it's kind of a common occurance. |

I think what Americans fail to grasp is "what if the shoe was on the other foot?" Some minority coalition led by, oh, France was using a military occupation to dictate to Americans how to set up their constitution and government. There would be quite a number of Americans who would be cutting the heads off of any European they found in their country.
They'd be saying basically what the Iraqi in the street is saying "Okay, thanks for toppling our dictator now get out." |

People that revel in and enjoy the deaths of innocent people in order to further their own political goals should consider themselves in the same league with George Bush and Pat Robertson.
Yes, I'm talking to you. |

At least 134 killed in attacks across Iraq
80 killed in one bombing
By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Suicide bombers infiltrated a line of police recruits and a crowd of Shiite pilgrims Thursday as insurgents killed 125 civilians and five U.S. soldiers, escalating attacks while political factions worked to forge a coalition government.
The stark surge in post-election violence produced familiar but heartrending images on a day that was the fourth deadliest since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

That wasn't my point. Even after the Americans do eventually leave Iraq, it will not become a liberal democracy, simply because Islam is not conducive to producing it. It will become an oppressive anti-Western Shariah state. That was why the whole 'let's build democracy' was so ill conceived. |

Hmmm, it didn't work too well with Ireland/ Northern Ireland, India/ Pakistan, Israel/ Palestine, etc. etc. There's been virtually unending war to one degree or another in all those countries |
